How to use Chia Seeds

| To get the most out of Chia, make Chia Gel. It's one part Chia Seeds to 9 parts water. I make it in a Mason jar (shake or stir until the seeds begin to suspend in the gel) and keep it in the refrigerator. It creates a thick gel that you can add to most anything and it doesn't change the flavor. There's lots of info on the Web. Have a look! Chia seeds are phenomenal. |

This is a great thing to have. If you don't know, you should educate yourself of the power of chia seeds. They have a long history of being used by warriors and runners throughout the ages.
I personally have these for breakfast and feel energized well past 3 in the afternoon when i have my lunch. In fact i just ordered a 5 pound bag from the same seller, i strongly recommend it. |

| This is my first experience with Chia. I bought the book and read the nutritional value of the product. I have been using it for a month. It really cleanses the digestive system. It takes getting used to at first, as it has the texture of Okra. It has no flavor to speak of, so I use it twice daily and have sprinkled it on cereal, salads and mixed it half and half with jam. With Jam, used when it is mixed with water. I mix up a 1/2 cup of Chia with 9 equal parts of water and put it in the refrigerator to have available to use. I have a cup of green tea and put approx. 1/4 cup in the tea. |
Great product

After reading a few articles on the nutritional value of Chia seeds, I decided to bite the bullet and order some to try out for myself. I have added them to teas and juices, as well as oatmeal for breakfast. No adverse affects, nor have I experienced any unsatisfying tastes or textures.
I will say, once cooked, the seeds are quite filling! The seeds absorb quite a bit of water. I have reduced breakfast from two packets of oatmeal and fresh fruit down to one packet of oatmeal, fresh fruit, and a tablespoon of Chia.
A summary of their nutritional value from Wikipedia:
Chia seeds are typically small ovals with a diameter of about one millimeter. They are mottle-colored with brown, gray, black and white. Chia seeds typically contain 20% protein, 34% oil, 25% dietary fiber (mostly soluble with high molecular weight), and significant levels of antioxidants (chlorogenic and caffeic acids, myricetin, quercetin, and kaempferol flavonols). The oil from chia seeds contains a very high concentration of omega-3 fatty acid -- approximately 64%. Chia seeds contain no gluten and trace levels of sodium. There are no known toxic components of chia.

Cha-Cha-Cha-Chia!

I never thought I'd be eating chia seeds (Salvia Hispanica), but it just goes to show that you never know.
I'd heard about it and done some research and am thrilled that something so rich in Omega-3s, anitoxidants, complete protiens and vitamins can be had at such a good price. And yes, it was the price that drew me to this particular brand -- less than half what you would pay for it at a health food store even with shipping. The 2lb version was shipped in sealed, sturdy plastic bags in a Priority Mail envelope. I suppose there is a chance it could get damaged in shipping but mine arrived fine and fast!
The seeds themselves are good quality. Dry, they taste a bit like poppy seeds. These can be mixed into other foods or grounds into a meal. I don't bother, I eat them as is. Another option is to make them into the "chia gel" (or jelly, or 'slime' as my brother calls it). Combine 1/3 of a cup of seeds with 2 cups of warm water and mix well. As the seeds sit they quickly absorb 10x to 12x their size in water. After a few hours you have a thick gel that with the black seeds looks a bit like small froggs eggs. The consitency reminds me a bit of tapioca or even a little like okra, but it has a neutral flavor and mixes easily with anything. You can even use it to replace fats and oils when baking! This gel stores for about 2 weeks in the refridgerator and can be cosumed as needed. The dry seed can be stored indefinitely, a big plus over flax seeds as they can go rancid.
Do some research on the web and then give them a try. I think you might become chia nut like I've become! |
Great Price and Product? Best Survival and Diet Food Ever?

| The chia seed is probably one of the most versatile, nutrition-packed, economical diet foods available. There are virtually no side effects - all of the good and none of the bad. You can make chia gel to store in your refrigerator and eat alone or mixed with yogurt or other food. The chia seeds will keep you from feeling hungry and provide an excellent source of hydration and sustained energy. You can also add chia seeds to salad dressing or sprinkle them on foods. Chia seed gel is tasteless so it can be used as a fat substitute for baking as well. Chia seeds can also be added to fruit smoothies as a high fiber, low-carb source of protein and good fat. Wouldn't it also make sense to keep a package of chia seeds in your car (well-wrapped of course) along with water in the event that you were stranded? Unlike flax seeds, chia seeds should not go rancid if kept dry. Chia seeds as compared with flax seed contain more nutrients and have no offensive taste or odor. Raw Food World offers a very good value for purchasing in small and medium quantities. The double-wrap packaging is excellent and re-usable, the chia seeds are food-grade clean and fresh, and delivery is very prompt. Check out the Aztec history of chia seeds. A great addition to your "good fat" or "nut and seed" diet! |

| Got my chia seeds very quickly, had information on how to soak them which I appreciated. I soaked them and it made a jelly substance with the seeds softening so they were edible. I put the jelly in everything, yogurt, smoothies, or just eat it with a spoon. It fills me up and gives me energy with almost zero calories, I have really grown to like the fun consistency, kinda like clear tapioca pudding. Great stuff, and a little goes a long way so this is a great value. |

| This super food is an excellent addition to one's diet. It's versatile, inexpensive and helps with appetite control as well as adds a boost of protein and fiber to meals. I personally prefer to take it by just following a spoonful of dry seeds with a full glass of water ten minutes before meals, though with cooking you can add them to just about anything by making the gel. I also like that they come in zip bags, a pound each (as well as free samples of other products from the manufacturer!! Yay). Makes them a lot easier to access. One note though, be careful not to spill them as they are atrociously difficult to clean up! I made that mistake the first day I got them. Oh well. One thing that I was unimpressed with however was the commercialism of the seller-seemed overly eager to promote themselves. Otherwise I'm happy with the sale, it shipped quickly and the product does what it claims. |
A great way to make healthy desserts!

I fell in love with chia seeds. Recently while on a restricted diet, I'd use them to thicken a blueberry beverage and use it to top pancakes. I've used them to make "tapioca" pudding, and my husband and I both preferred it to the real thing.
I also really enjoy an iced Dandy Blend beverage made with these. I put a teaspoon of Dandy Blend, a teaspoon of agave nectar, about 5 drops of English Toffee flavored Stevia, and 1-3 tsp of chia seeds into 1/3 glass of water. Let set for 10 minutes or so to give the seeds a chance to gel, then fill glass with milk and ice. All ingredients of course can be adjusted to taste. I purchase all these items on amazon.com, so I should name it Amazon's Exotic Blend or something.
I wonder if this could have anything to do with my spider veins fading? I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing differently to make that happen, because I want to keep it up till they're gone, and I've been using chia seeds for about 4 months now. I'll definitely keep using chia seeds either way, because I enjoy them so much.
This is a great company, and at $9.50/ 2 lb. it's the best price on chia seeds that I've found, if you don't factor in the shipping. I get my shipping reimbursed anyway, so that's not a factor for me. |

The product itself, 2 pounds of chia seeds, is spectacular. Chia seeds are a very valuable addition to your diet and when prepared properly (water, chia, lemon juice, sugar) are quite palatable. I can't emphasize enough the values of the seeds, for more info see Born To Run by Christopher McDougall.
Not only is this an excellent product, but is a great deal. Compared with prices in whole food and specialty stores these chia seeds are cheaper of a factor of 2 or 3. Note, 2 pounds of chia is a lot! You will not use 2 pounds quickly... |

I've been hooked ever since. (You can find the recipe on her website,[...]).Perfect for camping or traveling or just a solid meal for everyday. This was the best deal on the web and at health food stores. The company also included a few samples of their other products and instructions on how to prepare the chia seeds. I don't mind the crunch that they add to my smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, etc...so I usually just eat them whole. I know that I would eat more of them if prepared them the way you should (the gelatin). I don't know when these will expire, so I may have to start eating the gelatin (doesn't seem appealing to me).

| I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about people eating chia seeds, but I finally bought myself some, and now I'm totally hooked. They're such an easy way to get more omega 3 fatty acids and protein into your diet. I've been adding them to my morning bowl of oatmeal and it thickens them up in such a weirdly wonderful way, and the cool thing is, you can't even taste them. I highly recommend other people trying out chia seeds too. Especially vegetarians and vegans who might not be getting enough of their omega 3's from other sources. |

| first heard about chia from that "Born to Run" book by Christopher MacDougall (which is an AMAZING mind-blowing book) and I bought into the idea of an energizing superfood. I don't expect to turn into one of the ultramarthon running tarahumara indians, but some boost in my day wouldn't hurt. As a broke college student, any food providing healthy nutrition AND energy is a godsend. I also dehydrate easily in winter, so the water retaining properties of chia also interested me. So far as I've read, heating up chia seeds is not recommended, it affects the chia seeds' ability to retain water at the amazing rate they do. In the book, macdougall mentioned mixing the chia seeds with water and lime juice. So I tried it out in a water bottle, apparently shaking up the gel before it solidifies leaves the substance more liquid-y than gel-like, which is obviously easier to drink out of a bottle, so that didn't bother me. If you want the thick gel so many people recommend, let the chia sit still in the water. The seeds did not compeltely dissolve, so they did look a bit like frog's eggs, but the mixture (2 tbsp chia, the recommended daily amount, with 9 equal parts water, which is about 1 cup plus 2 tbsp, and half a lime squeezed in) tastes just fine. Drinking this chia mix was even surprisingly filling, I don't have a lot of time to eat or even find food that isn't beef, beer, pizza or cheese related, so this held me off until I could get home and eat real food. As for non-red bull related energy sources, Chia has been great. |

I liked these seeds a lot. They were packages within several zip-lock bags to make sure they did not spill.
The reason for 4 stars is that these seeds have a small amount of husks and `duds`. These are like the other chia seeds, but smaller. They are black and round instead of multi-colored and oval like the `regular` chia seeds.
Other than that, great quality as far as I can tell. |

| OK so here is why i give this four stars... The delivery was fine and the product itself was sealed / fresh etc. My problem is the nutritional information on the package is radically different from web based sources. According to them one tablespoon or 15 grams contains 373 calories. every other source says 15 grams should contain roughly 70 calories. My question is, is this simply a misprint that should say 73 instead of 373 or am I eating something that is not a chia seed? Also the fiber they claim in this serving is higher than other info. I would really like to know what i am eating. |

The seeds themselves are interesting if you've never used them before. I didn't care for using them in the gel form, a little to slimy for me. But I just eat them strait out of the bag . . . 1 tablespoon in the morning and I'm set for the day. A lot of people I know grind them up and mix them with yogurt. They are tasty, kind of nutty in flavor. I haven't noticed a large increase in my energy level since using them, and unlike others who've tried them I can't say that I've lost any weight either. I do know that the nutritional value is a huge bonus and I will continue to use chia seeds as an addition to my daily supplements! |

Now because there are so many positive reviews I'm sure this stuff works for a lot of people, but every time I ate the Chia gel I became sick and just had an overall negative reaction to the stuff. Hopefully cases like this are few and far between. I didn't give the product a low score because I don't want to drop its rating because I simply have a bad reaction to it. Chia is a really good food. Full of omega 3, soluble fiber, and protein. I put chia seeds in a coffee grinder and use the meal on my cereal in the morning.
One thing I can't stand is this irrational hippy crap of "it contains no chemicals". Everything is a chemical. Maybe they didn't use synthetic chemicals to produce it, but it certainly contains chemical, lots of good ones to be sure, but it contains chemicals. There a are loads of plants in nature that have very bad chemicals that you don't want in your body. No chemicals is just a garbage statement. How about pesticide free, or something to that effect, that would at least have meaning. |

| The bag arrived open and unsealed. Chia seeds everywhere. I will be forever trying to clean them up. |
Might be healthy but how do you eat them?

| I have this big bag of seeds that will stay there because I was under the impression that I could grow them like alfalfa sprouts. I don't think so. Some say to eat the seed as it is but I do not normally eat a spoonful of seeds. |
I'm sure the product is fine if I could just get it.
