The Perfect Shave
|
| Review Date: November 8, 2005 |
| Reviewer: Bobby P., |
I've been on the quest for the perfect shave ever since I started shaving, which incidentally, is the day I realized I really didn't like shaving very much.
Combined with a Gillette Mach 3 Turbo razor, this soap gives as close to a perfect shave as I've ever experienced. Using this razor/soap combo, I am able to shave AGAINST the grain. I still use other shaving products for convenience, but when I really want a great shave, I reach for the Colonel Ichabod Conk.
By the way, the soap comes in a little plastic container that can be closed, so there's no need to put the soap in a mug or other container. This means it won't take up much space in your medicine cabinet. |
Great Soap for a wet shaver!

| Reviewer: Nicholas Fanzo, |
Well, I am a few months into my DE wet shaving practice. Since abandoning the Mach 3 capitalist garbage, my life has improved greatly. Never again. Never will I use that Fusion, "Super technology, flies like an airplane, cleans your kitchen and takes out your trash, hacks up your face for 30$ a refill pack." razor.
Anyway, the soap.
I have tried many Soaps and Creams for shaving and Col. Conk is as great a soap as any of the other 40$ brands. I have a wooden container of Truefitt and Hill soap in my bathroom and I haven't used it in weeks due to this little 3.00$ miracle.
My Taylor of Old Bond Street creams have been sitting in my medicine cabinet because the Col. whipped them into shape.
The bay rum soap is Glycerin based, so you may have to adjust your lathering a little bit, if you are used to triple milled hard soaps like T&H.
Make sure you get A LOT of the soap from the puck into your brush.
To build a lather, Whip it HARD and fast for a good minute in your bowel. Make sure to add little drops of water every 15 seconds or so.
Keep Whipping it good, Grandpa!
you should get one of the best lathers for a shave you ever had!

We originally bought Colonel Conk shaving soap when liquid, gel or cream toiletries were suddenly not allowed in carry-on luggage onboard airplanes. We bought a shaving brush to go with it and my husband was really pleased with the result. Nice lather with a pleasant fragrance.
My husband flies very frequently, and when he's shaving at home he still sometimes uses the canned shaving gel, but even though toiletries under 3oz are allowed on airplanes these days he continues to carry Colonel Conk with him on the road instead of shaving gel or cream. I'd estimate he uses it about 4-5 days a week and at that rate one tub has lasted many months. |

I ordered this soap when I decided to start shaving with a straight razor. I haven't found someone to adequately sharpen the razor I bought, but I decided to give the shaving soap a try with my Fusion. WOW!
I have been using it for almost four weeks now, and what amazing results!
- I'm getting much closer, smoother shaves.
- No shaving bumps!
- Not a single nick!
- Smells wonderful, although the scent fades quickly.
- I am actually shaving faster now.
- After almost thirty shaves, the bar still looks new!
All in all, an incredible value, and I will definitely be sticking with this product. |

The Closest Shave You'll Ever Know

| I have to say that this is my first time using shaving soap and I couldn't be happier. Colonel Conk's was an excellent choice and it really helps keep your skin nice and hidrated as you shave. The lather remains nice and thick and I really have to recommend the Bay Rum smell. It is the way that a man should smell. Use this shaving soap along with a safety razor or if you prefer a straight razor and you will not be disappointed. My face was left looking clean and smooth and I really enjoy the experience now. You truly get the closest shave that you'll ever know, in the words of Sweeney Todd. |
Great shave at a great price!

This stuff works very well, I actually prefer it to some soaps that cost six times the price. Great volumes of slippery lather, and a nice subtle scent. I'm not ordinarily a fan of bay rum, as it's generally too strong and sickly sweet, but at this low concentration it's very nice and has really grown on me. The scent does not linger, so it won't interfere with your aftershave or cologne.
You can certainly use it right out of the simple package, although it may not be something you want to leave out on the counter. I pop the puck into an small, inexpensive bowl (from the local Chinese market!)and heat it in the microwave for about 15 seconds. It quickly melts into the form of the bowl, and cools right back down in a few minutes. |

Best shave I ever had

| Reviewer: S. Helgerson, Abu Dhabi, UAE |
You simply have to try this stuff! I tried it because I heard that some good, quality shaving soap would clear up razor burn and help with in-grown hairs and it's true. Just get a decent brush (don't spend too much on it - I spent $3.50 on a boar hair brush) and you're good to go. If you get the amount of water just right you'll find that the lather is better than any of the regular shave creams or foams or gels you can get down at the drug store. Plus, this doesn't have as much impact on the environment. I'm sick to death of plastic packages and cans of shave cream that don't always get recycled. This tub of soap comes in a little plastic container but lasts forever and you can recycle it at the end. I do wish it came in a paper or metal or glass container. I've used it every day for two months and I've only gone through about 3mm out of the 4cm deep bar.
Get the aftershave too. It's great stuff.

My favorite shaving bar

| Reviewer: TheDarkTrumpet, Iowa, USA |
I've tried a number of different products - from the can of white shaving cream from walmart, to the gel also from walmart, to a bar from the coop, to also some "goo" from the coop, and now this. What have I found out? This is better than the others.
This bar lathers extremely easily, with little effort needed for creating the lather compared other bars. It's also a lot more slippery than the gels that I've tried. The fragrance is also extremely good (I got the lime flavor).
I recommend giving this product a try for your shaving needs. So far (and I've gone through almost an entire bar so far), I feel that this is some of the best stuff I've used. |

This soap lathers up well, and performs as a glycerin soap should. It smells great, but the smell is gone with a rinse. I got a good fit in my shaving mug by microwaving for about ten seconds, then letting the melted soap cool.

| Having used a safety razor and badger brush for over 10 years, I have tried many different shaving creams, soaps etc. In my view this is the best. Gives a very close shave (I do use a preshave oil that is also very helpful - made by the art of shaving). Considering the price and how good this soap is, I don't see myself using anything else in the future. |

Col. Conk Bay Rum shaving soap is my favorite because I like the aroma, and it gives a very easy lather, although you have to get a lot of soap in your brush when whipping it up. It fits any mug of 3 inches diameter, as this cake is 2 1/2 inches. It shaves cleaner than shaving cream, and doesn't clog your razor. Not only that, it rinses easily when you're done shaving, unlike another cake I tried which irritated my face for some reason.
I would also suggest pairing this product with Clubman Bay Rum lotion, which comes in 2 sizes, either 6 or 12 ounces. This would be the kind of thing your grandpa might have used. |

Besides, this might be something like the kind of soap your grandpa once used. For those who haven't heard of it before, bay rum is a spicy scent, and you might like to add Clubman Bay Rum after shave lotion to your order as well. You'll love it. |

| This is my first cake of Col Conk soap and I must say that I am very well pleased. My knowledge of cake soap isn't too deep as this is only my second cake as well. However, the price can't be beat. I have a cake of Haslinger Sandalwood (from royalshave.com) that was about the same size and it cost me $[...], while this one makes just as good a lather (if not better) and smells just as great. Though I will try other soaps, Col Conk will definitely be a reorder for me in the future. |

| Colonel Conk soap is glycerine based which makes it stand out from ordinary mug soaps. It quickly produces a very dense and slick lather that provides a protective cushion between the blade and your face. It works great with a safety razor and the Colonel Conk badger blend brush. It rinses easily from your face and razor, and seems to last a long time. I use the amber because it has a very mild scent. |

Superior Product

| Reviewer: Claymore6, In the service of our country |
This is a superior product. I received a Parker 96R butterfly razor for my birthday in December and have been re-learning to shave ever since. It's amazing how many bad habits you develop using disposable cartridge multi-blade razors... let's just say that, once you learn how to use them, with this soap and a good safety razor you will have the closest, smoothest shave of your life. It's actually a pleasure to use, not a duty. Be careful, though: Do some research and pay attention! If you try to shave with a safety razor in the ham-handed way you've learned to shave with some disposable, even a good one, you will cut yourself a lot. Hint: this is a LOT sharper.
The best way to protect yourself, apart from learning how to use it, is to use a good soap. I particularly like the this lime Colonel Conk soap... the glycerin mix is perfect, not only does it work up a nice lather, but it also provides the perfect lubricant during the shave, with a nice cooling moisturizing effect afterward. You'll feel the cool rush during the shave: I shave in the shower and it is a nice sensation.

| I'm on my 5th or 6th shave with a DE razor, and this soap type. I have used canned stuff my whole life until recently. I have a really nice badger hair brush, and this soap. I shave with the grain, then against/sideways on the grain for my 2nd pass. I can't bare to shave "UP". This soap is GREAT! I have nothing to compare it with, but, it really feels good and smells good too. I am using the bay rum, but, I bought some almond also, they both smell great. The smell lasts for a good bit, but, I've been using some shave balm afterward that overpowers it. I will never go back to canned shaving cream. Shaving is actually comfortable now. Next... straight razor...hmmm.. |

| This is a great shave soap to use with my Merkur DE razor and badger brush. The soap has almond and avocado oil as moisturizers. I am so happy that there is not a hint of mint or alcohol [to my knowledge] in this soap-I really do not enjoy all that tingling or feeling of dryness after shaving. This is good quality soap. |

| I'm a big fan of this soap. Their bay rum is a clean, simple interpretation that is noticeable without being overpowering and washes off when the shave is done. Not too spicey/pastry smelling - more soapy, if you know what I mean. It's glycerine based so you gotta whip it (whip it good) to get the lather up, but it does the job just fine and leaves the skin feeling great. My straight's glide nicely over this. You get alot of soap for the dollar too! Way cheaper than some of the stuff out of the UK and supposedly made here in the US. By the way, it melts in just seconds in the microwave - pour into your favorite container and have at it (after it cools of course)... |

I will be using this soap from now on and would recommend it to anyone interested in this type of shaving. |

I first tried solid shaving soap after I tired of driving over mountains only to find my shaving kit filled with the foam from a leaky can. Solid shaving soap not only solved the leaky can problem, it has a comparable price, lasts longer, takes up a fraction of the space and works every bit as well -- better when used with a brush (and even better than that with a proper up and down brush stroke.)
Colonel Ichabod Conk Lime Shave Soap is a glycerine based soap that is more expensive than, but superior to non glycerine based soaps such as Van Der Hagen Deluxe Shave Soap - 2.5 oz, or Williams Mug Shaving Soap - 1.7 Oz; however, Colonel Conk is slightly irritating, it stings just a bit if you leave it on too long (but stops stinging as soon as you wash it off.)
Colonel Conk is not as good -- or as expensive -- as the magnificent European shaving creams like Proraso Eucalyptus Shaving Cream Tube, yet it gives great lather and a buttery smooth shave with no need for aftershave (though you may still want one), and leaves a very nice scent that is light, does not overpower, and goes well with the classic light or citrus colognes.
Like all such soaps, Conk fits perfectly into a Dark Wood Shave Bowl with Lid. Make sure to use with plenty of hot water, a double edge razor and a good badger hair brush, and be sure to protect your brush with a good stand too, such as a Nickel Shaving Brush Holder. |

The only complaint I have with this product is that the smell doesn't stick around as long as I'd like! Of course, this isn't a defect of the product at all, as it's shaving soap, not an after-shave of any kind.
It's simply and effectively packaged in thin plastic; if you're worried about how sleek your bathroom looks, you'll want to drop it into a separate tub of some sort.
The soap works up a pretty good lather reasonably easily. While this is my first Cake o' Shaving Soap, I am happy with it, and would recommend it to others. |

I just recently switched from a contemporary razor (Mach 91 30 blade blah blah - whatever) to a safety razor (Merkur Model 180 Long Handled Safety Razor). I made the switch because I was getting tired of the prices of the replacement blades for the new razors and after some research found that safety razors can give a much better shave. Along with the razor switch I swapped out my gel shaving cream for this Colonel Conk. I have to say I'm really impressed with the difference and despite a rough start I'm really happy I made the switch.
SCENT
The soap has subtle bay rum scent that is pretty nice. I really like it though because it's subtle enough not to really be noticed after the shave. This is nice because it won't conflict with any other products you may be using (aftershave, cologne, etc.)
LATHER
Now I'll admit there is a certain finesse involved in creating and applying a nice lather. I won't go into detail here but I will recommend that you do a little research to help you get started if this is your first shaving 'soap'. I struggled a bit the first few shaves. I found YouTube very helpful, just do some quick searches, there's tons of videos showing you how to make a good lather. Essentially the trick is just finding a nice balance of the soap and water and whipping it up.
On a side note, a trick to getting the soap to fill in a container is to cut it up into chunks and microwave it in the container. Make sure you do it in short 10sec bursts so you don't burn the soap, two was enough to melt it for me. Then just let it cool and it'll look like it was made for the container. I use a small bowl to keep mine in, just make sure whatever you use is microwave safe if you're going to nuke it.

I was leery of buying/using block shave cream for the 1st time. I was pleasantly surprised. It shaves as well as the canned stuff, with the triple-edged razors.
I was worried about paying so much for a little block of glycerin, but, believe me, one block will probably last 6 months. It lathers quickly, goes on well, and washes off easily.
It is ecologically sound, because you are not using cans with foamy water. Less weight to carry home form the store. Creates no significant garbage.
Some times the old is better.
Wish I had learned about this stuff earlier. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5, is because I have not used others to compare it with |

Good Lubrication, and good lather very quick, it only takes me 40 seconds to whip up a nice lather. Smell is weak, Nice smell, but a little weak. Not a Cologne Soap for sure, but pleasing scent is there. I'd recommend it to my friends. (if they'd take up Wet-Shaving) |

| I like the smell of the lime and it lathers ok, but it is being used up faster than I expected and seems to dry my face out pretty badly. I'm going to try a few other soaps and see how they go, but I could see myself maybe coming back to old Colonel Conk from time to time, especially if I have a nice moisturizing after shave balm to follow it up with. |
Oh What a Soap

| For the price, Conk is a very good soap. A good lather with little effort Lets the blade run easy over the face, and does a nice job keeping the beard moist. The Bay Rum could use a little more scent. For me this soap is at the right price and has the right quality. My search for a shaving soap is over. |

| Col. Conk's world famous shaving soap. Very satisfied with this product but a bit disappointed that the Bay Rum fragrance was a bit on the timid side. Highly superior to the Williams brand that I had been using. |

| I prefer hot shaving soap applied with a brush to any other method of shaving. This product fits my shaving mug a bit loosely but it usually stays stuck in place while working up a lather with the brush. It makes a good lather and I get a smooth shave. All in all a good product, and the price is right. The Bay Rum fragrance is nice but none too pronounced while shaving. |
Fine, Cost Conscious Choice

Purchased the almond variety for use with a DE razor. As a newbie wet shaver I sprang for a far pricier Proraso cream the first time out - which was admittedly very nice. Now that I have at least a vague idea of what I'm doing I've been looking for a more cost effective solution. Col Conk's Almond performed nicely. This soap creates a very slick lather - not as thick or heavy as some others but very lubricative. I feel well protected using this soap - even as I start to experiment with more advanced razor techniques. All in all a fantastic buy. The almond version also smells great: having an understated, not overly sweet aroma. Far richer and soapier than jerkins almond-cherry, though somewhat similar in character. I would describe it as a rich smell, but I use that to describe the way it smells and not the strength of its aroma. It is a rich scent: nutty, soapy, and sweet; but it shows up with very little intensity saving it from the unpleasant cloying effect that torpedoes many similar scentings.
Have also tried the lime, which has a great 'clean' smell but didn't lather as willingly as the almond -- this may have something to do with my brush, technique, or local water quality. Have heard good things from friends about the bay rum and amber - will be trying those next. |
Bay Rum Review

| I am fairly new to wet shaving and have only my experience with Proraso shaving cream and Geo. F. Trumper sandalwood shaving soap to use as a comparison. I am a fan of Bay Rum, so I thought I would give Col Conks Bay Rum shaving soap a shot. The price was definitely right. The scent reminds me of a traditional barbershop. It's a light, classic scent that was my favorite among the three products I've tried so far. I just wish the product performed as well as it smells. I used my shaving brush to create a lather directly on my face for approximately one minute, just as I had with my other products. It wasn't as thick or slippery as the Proraso cream. The Trumper soap created a similar amount of lather, but the lubricity seemed slightly better with the Trumper product. As far as efficacy goes, Proraso is the victor, with the Trumper's in second and Conks bringing up the rear. Conks is the least expensive of the three, but the most important attribute for any shaving soap/cream for me is how it affects my shave. As always with products of this sort, your milage may vary and this may work very well for you. I'd choose it over your average grocery store goo, but as the worst performer in my medicine cabinet, I will probably look at other products the next time I go shopping. |

| I like the idea of shave soap, but man... having used Taylor shaving cream, this stuff just takes too much effort and time to lather and apply. While I enjoy a nice close, clean shave, shave soap just isn't practical for me. I do like the smell and feel of this stuff when I do take the time to use it, but I actually think I get a better, more enjoyable shave using Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream. |

| Having this as my first shave soap, I at first found it magnificent, blowing away my old habits of canned products. But after a while, I realized that it wasn't as amazing as I thought it was, it would weep away moisture rather quickly, and would require a well soaked, but relatively dry brush in order to load correctly. The lather is thick if you make it right, but it's no über lather, and not as good as some of the smaller company soaps that you can find on their respective sites. Definitely worth the (small amount of) money it costs, but look around if you're looking for a little more oomph. |

| It's ok but I think there are much better soaps out there. It makes decent lather and the smell isn't overpowering. It's not bad enough to scrap and go with something else, but it's just good enough to stay with until it runs out so you can buy something else. I have also noticed that it leaves behind a soap scum buildup on everything it touches. I've used for a few weeks now and I had to scrub the junk off my razor. |

| Wasn't overly impressed with this product. I ended up buying "C.O. Bigelow" at Bath and Body Works. They are selling Proraso shave cream under the C.O. Bigelow name and it is a far superior product. |

I should point out that even though I gave it a 3, its definitely a good product. My personal preference is based on the scent, which I don't like. That shouldn't detract people from buying this, as all the colonel's soaps make great lather for shaving and I will be buying their lime soap again.
I thought I would try this as Bay Rum is a very popular scent for old time barbershops in the US, coming from the UK I was unfamiliar with it and thought I would try it based on other peoples reviews on shaving forums, When I got it, I realised the scent was not for me, but I REALLY would recommend people to check this out if they like the smell of Bay Rum. It's a really good soap.
My son took the soap off me and loves it, so its good - just not for me. |
Soap for shaving

| This shaving soap serves it's purpose nicely and has a very mild bay rum scent, but I don't know if I'll be a repeat customer. It's not bad... I think I just prefer the convenience of a shaving cream in a squeeze tube, like King of Shaves Alpha Gel or Trader Joe's Honey Mango Shave Cream. |
Not bad for the price.

| The product works well and gives me a very good shave, but I hate the container. Just a bar of soap in a plastic container. Your probably supposed to open the plastic once and put the shave soap in a soap dish, but that doesn't really work in a shower. |

I bought this as a gift for a friend who shaves with and collects straight razors. I was disappointed when I opened the box to find that the soap comes in a clear plastic, clam shell, type container. It's the kind of thing a serving of pudding should come in. I felt like I'd put a quarter in a gumball machine only I'd spent a lot more than just a quarter.
If I was buying this for myself I wouldn't have minded BUT it would have been nice to know before I bought the product. |
Good......But Much Better And Cheaper To Be Had
|

| I have been using a mug and brush for just about as long as I have been unfortunately shaving. (Which is a while, trust me.) Shaving soaps are something that I always get a kick out of trying the different blends I come across. Before EBay came into my life, the only new soaps I was able to try is whatever brands and flavors I happened across in drug and novelty stores. Unfortunately after a while I started seeing the same over priced blends. Colonel Conks is not a brand I ever heard of until I saw it here on Amazon and decided to try a cake. It makes a nice rich foamy lather to be sure. And it has a nice scent to it. Not strong, but pleasant and noticeable. However as pleasing as the shave is with the Colonel's blend, I have to say that there are far better choices to be had on Ebay. Type in "shaving soap" on Ebay and you will be absolutely amazed at the number and variety of home made vendors who whip up speciality blends of their own. Not only are they numerous and cheaper on average, but the selection of scents is far broader as well. And, it has been my experience with the cakes I have bought on Ebay that they average at least 3 oz, and many times 3 1/2 oz or larger in size. A whole ounce more soap for your money. I have a collection of soaps from Ebay that could easily take care of every shave I will ever need till I up and join "club mud". If you are still an avid mug and brush shaver like me, Colonel Conks is a fine choice if you want to limit yourself to what's available here. However if you tend to be the adventurous type, do yourself a favor and do a little shopping on Ebay for shaving soaps. You will find it not only a lot of fun to browse the different varieties, but it will open up a whole new world of selection for you... |
$7.29?????/

HOW THE HECK DID I PAY $7.29 FOR THIS PIECE OF CRAPPY SOAP WHICH DOES NOTHING BUT GETS WHITE AND DOES NOT LATHER YOUR FACE... I THREW OUT THE SOAP AFTER THE FIRST USE. I DEFINATELY WOULD RECOMMEND ( Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Jar ) it costs $5 more, contains twise as much soap as in this little "THING" and soaps up your face. Only downside of the Taylor soap is that it does not have a scent, on the other hand the Colonel Conk soap has a lime scent when not using it... In the Jar..
Believe me, you will regret that you ever paid so much for it, or paid anything at all.
Only reason I give it 2 start is because of it's scent... |
Not horrible. Not worth it.

There's just nothing special about this stuff, and it's expensive. Bland and pricey is a bad combination.
I'm using it with the same double-edged razor and kinds of blades I've always used - which is for about 20 years now - and I'm just not impressed.
It lathers up okay, but as I'm using a nice badger brush it's got no excuse not to. Thing is, it's not especially slippery and leaves my face on the dry side. Also, although the scent I got - almond - smelled nice the first day I used it, it didn't last. Since then, no fragrance at all.
My standby, regular soap is WIlliams Mug Shaving Soap, which I've never taken to be especially good or anything. It only cost a dollar, tho, and that's about what it's worth. Unfortunately, that's about all the good Colonel is worth, too. In fact, I've gone back to Williams even tho I have half of the Conk soap left.
Pass this up and try out something else. |
Smells like dishwasher soap

| One would expect a lime shaving soap to smell like limes. This smells like dishwasher soap. This glycerin soap also doesn't have a very good lathering ability. The foam never gets very developed. I'm just not happy with it. It just smells terrible. Sorry purchase. |

This shave soap was the worst shave soap I've ever used!! The soap does not produce a good lather and when you do it drys out very quickly. The smell does not smell like limes..but more like a plastic of some kind.
If your looking for an inexpensive shave soap that gives a great lather and a close shave I would recommend (Van Der Hagen)I have used their shave soap and have had no problem's with it(knock on wood)But as far as
Colonel Ichabod Conk Col. Conk World's Famous,it does not give a good shave.I'm only giving it two stars because of the packaging and color of the soap both I think are cool looking but that's about it. |

Review of the Bay Rum- Not Worth more than $2

| Reviewer: Chris S. King, Los Angeles, CA USA |
| This is an inferior product unless I just got an old dried out hunk of poorly made soap from a bad batch or something (anything is possible). This created very little lather and was inferior to even the drug store "Williams Mug Soaps" that can be had for $2 (sometimes $1 here on Amazon!)or even Van Der Hagen (also $2 at Rite Aid/CVS) which produce a much better lather. Two thumbs down for this Conk-out. It doesn't hardly even smell of bay rum !?!!. Literally throwing it in the trash after ten attempts to use this product- just don't understand the great review here!?!? Perhaps they have never tried Trumpers/Poraso/Williams/Van Der Hagen or anything else on the market !??! I hope I got a boot leg from Taiwan or something or this is a world famous rip-in-z-off-sky and that's all I have to say about that. |
