Chalk up one anecdotal success story.

I am a physician. I was on lipitor for about 4 years until I found out it was giving me rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The manufacturers of statins state that this is a rare side effect and I even counselled my patients that this is about a 1/200 incidence. Well after delving into the research a bit more it turns out that pretty much everyone taking statins has some degree of muscle pathology on biopsy, with the majority being subclinical...but not insignificant. Being a work-out nut this could not be tolerated.
I stopped the Lipitor and went on a low fat diet (20% fat) with Mega Red. To be fair I am also taking a proprietary 3-6-9 omega oil blend as well (Udo's Blend) although it is not clear that this affects cholesterol levels and makes no claims to. I have been on the Mega Red for about 2 months and the low fat diet for about 2 weeks and got my levels rechecked. Total cholesterol went from 240 (pre-lipitor) to 179. LDL from 160 to 119 and HDL from 35 to 40. All as good or better than I got on 20 mg of Lipitor.
Now I no longer have to worry about muscle breakdown and my LFT's are normal for the first time in 4 years. As an added bonus I can get this locally for about $27 for a 4-month supply (with coupon and buy-1-get-1 deals) which is about 1/4 the cost of Lipitor. Well this is one anecdotal success story so take it for what it's worth. I have put a lot of energy into exercizing and going low fat as well so under those circumstances I can say that it seems to work for me andI am very happy with the results. |

| Product is difficult to find in retail and was easily found through amazon. Was recommended by a doctor to try in the aid of lowering cholestral, and I, a person who cannot tolerate taking fish oil because of the size of the pill, let alone 3-6 a day, find Mega Red Krill sized right and easy, taking only 1 pill daily. Priced right and delivered efficiently. |

| These Schiff MegaRed Omega-3 softgels are definately a keeper. Absolutely no aftertaste at all!!! The aftertaste was my biggest problem with other omega-3 fish oil softgels-made me sick in the stomach. The Schiff softgels are tiny, which is great for anyone who has difficulties with large size capsules/softgels. I love these and highly recommend =) |
No side-effects.

| I was shopping price for this product (originally purchased at Costco) and noted the review that spoke about side effects. I've been taking this daily for the last 6 months and have had no side-effects of any kind. So, if this is the product you want, do not assume that it will cause side effects based on the one negative review. |

| I bought this for my mom a heart patient who must take fish oil daily. Her doctor told her to stick with the fish oil and not this he didn't know anything about it. But she changed her regimine because she was tired of taking six fish oil capsules a day. After a few months she had her blood work redone and he doctor couldn't believe how well it came back and told her to keep doing whatever she was doing because it was working. He also wrote down what she was using so he could recommend it to his patients instead of so many fish oil capsules a day. Not only did she reduce the number of pills she is taking daily but it showed better improvement in her blood work numbers than the fish oil had. |

| I was pleased to find the MegaRed Krill Oil on Amazon.com It was a larger quantity than what I could get at local stores and quite a bit less expensive. It shipped right a way. I will order again. There were several companies to choose from so I had to do some comparitive shopping, but it sure was easier from my computer than driving around in bad weather to several stores. I go for a cholestorol check in a week, so I'm hoping to find a better HDL/LDL. I noticed that several people wrote a negative review because MegaRed contains Sorbitol. I am especially sensitive to artificial sweetners, but this product doesn't bother me at all. |

After going to the doctor about back pain, I proceeded to tell him about foot and leg cramping that was happening to me. He took me off my cholesterol medication and put me on 300mg of Krill oil. I ordered it from The Natural Health Shoppe and had it sent to our daughter's apartment in Wisconsin. When I arrived there, some 4+ days later, it was there waiting for me. Talk about fast! That almost seemed like lightening. I've been on it since a few days before Christmas and the cramping in my legs has disappeared, along with the pain in my back subsiding.
Thank you for a great experience all around! Now, if we could only get rid of the fish smell in fish! Wow! What a miracle that would be! :)

| I have been on 10 mg of Lipitor daily for about three years now and along with Lipitor have been taking several vitamin supplements and an Omega3 fish oil supplement. While my total cholesterol went down from 205 to 130, my triglyceride level would remain a problem, never going below 220 until recently when I switched to 300 mg of MegaRed daily. After 6 months on MegaRed my triglyceride level is 145 and I have had no side effects whatsoever. I heartily recommend it. |

I cannot take other fish oil supplements, even those that are lemon flavored because the taste just would not go away.
I tried other krill oil softgels and when you would open the bottle the smell actually made me ill it was so offensive. Well, the Schiff MegaRed softgels have no offensive smell and do not have any lingering taste so I would recommend them highly. |

| I have a thyroid disease and it is very hard to keep my cholesterol under control. I can't take large horse pills and so I have never tried a fish oil. After my test in December came back at 258, I saw these pills at Target a few weeks later. I shook them up and looked through the side of the bottle for ages trying to figure out if they were really as small as they seemed. They definitely are small. I took them for 120 days and then just went to get retested....came back at 198. I am sold! |

I need to take fish oil for weight loss and for a healthy heart. I was burping so badly the regular large fish oil capsule. I decided to give these a try and I am so far very happy. No trace of an aftertaste!. I have not had my Chol, HDL, etc rechecked yet but I have a feeling it will be better.
Locally it is the full price so I'm glad Amazon gives us a little break. |

| Krill oil is a wonderful replacement for Fish Oil pills. Fish oil pills are usually huge and hard to swallow. Krill, on the other hand, is available in small tablets, which are easy to swallow, and contain three times the amount of relief of fish oil. This product is highly recommended! |

| I have been taking these for about three weeks and have not had the fish burps or nausea I was getting with other fish oils. I had trouble swallowing the other larger pills, so the small size of this pill is excellent...which means that I remember to take it every day instead finding an excuse "to take it later..." I get my blood work done next week and hope this has helped! |
Info From Schiff Regarding the Sorbitol in MEGA RED
|
| Review Date: March 25, 2010 |
| Reviewer: BJB, Phoenix, AZ |
After reading the reviews expressing concerns about the sorbitol in MEGA RED, I contacted Schiff as well as the company that provides the krill oil to Schiff. Here is my email dialogue with Schiff who promptly responded to my inquiry:
ME: I understand that sorbitol is an ingredient in the MEGA RED product. How much sorbitol is in each capsule and why has Schiff / Superba added the sorbitol when so many people try to avoid it? Why add something unhealthful to the healthful krill oil?
SCHIFF: Thank you for your inquiry. The sorbitol in our Schiff MegaRed Krill Oil formula is used as a humecant in the manufacturing of the gelatin softgel. Each softgel contains less than 1mg of sorbitol.
Please feel free to contact us if you have additional questions or concerns on our Schiff line of supplements.
Kind regards,
Schiff Consumer Service
1-800-526-6251 (8-5mst M-F)mpany that provides the krill oil to Schiff.
Now, to find out just what an impact 1 mg per softgel would have is another matter but this is what Schiff has informed me of. Many folks need to call or email Schiff asking them to remove the sorbitol. Also inquire as to what healthier humectant would they consider as an alternative to sorbitol. We the consumers can make a huge difference.

I miss the other benefits of Iceland Health, it used to help calm me down, have bipolar disorder, Also helped with arthritus, hopefilly, this little red pill is doing something, don't feel it, but am sick to stomach sometimes in AM, was not attributing it to this, I think I will Try going back to Iceland Health, CVS has it for 60 Gel capsules for 19 bucks, I used to getit here for 30 bucks for a 30 capsule bottle |

| My husband and I switched over to Krill Oil from Fish Oil to give it a try and see what all the "hype" was about! We do not like the krill oil at all. Neither one of us felt the same benefits from this one little pill as we did from our original fish oil pills. My husband suffers from depression and bi-polar and the fish oil pills really helped him A LOT, after 2 weeks on the krill oil we could see the change in his mod for the worse, they do not do the same thing (at least for him) for his bi-polar as the fish oil def do! We are switching back to fish oil asap!!! The DHA is much higher in our original fish oil product. |

Stronger fishy smell than Source Naturals NKO brand.
|
| Review Date: February 1, 2010 |
| Reviewer: S Myers, Baton Rouge, LA USA |
I had previously tried the Source Naturals NKO brand. This sells for about 22.40 for 60 capsules (500 Mg). I decided to try the MegaRed brand. At 90 capsules for about 21.00 (300 Mg), it was roughly the same cost per mg.
I didn't realize at first though that the dosage levels were different. This was my mistake.
The MegaRed capsules are definitely smaller - to be expected. Since I take 3 daily NKO capsules (1500 mg), I have to take 5 MegaReds to get a comparable dose.
My real complaint is that I'm met with a strong fishy smell from the MegaRed bottle whenever I open it. I don't notice the same problem with my NKO brand.
After I finish the MegaRed order, I will return to the Source Naturals NKO brand. |
Disappointed with ingredients...

I was delighted when I received the Costco flyer showing that they now offered the krill MegaRed. I'd been buying for some time, on an automatic shipment basis, Nordic Krill from Amazon. The price seemed excellent at $20.77 per month for 60 capsules (I take two a day). The MegaReds were listed as 90 capsules for about the same amount of money. However, when I looked at the ingredients and saw sorbitol listed, that was the end of MegaRed.
Even if the amount of sorbitol in each capsule is minute, I still reject ingesting sorbitol in any form. So, I guess it's back to Nordic Krill capsules from Amazon. Or perhaps the wild salmon I eat every day is actually sufficient and I don't really need to take a supplement. |
DISTURBING SIDE EFFECT
|
| Review Date: September 16, 2008 |
| Reviewer: JabbaMamma, Tucson, Arizona USA |
| Shortly after taking 2 caps a day I began having a phantom olfactory sensation (smell) of a sweet, sea-weedy, unpleasant nature. I actually started gagging in bed last evening and put perfume on the end of my nose to distract myself! I couldn't find any external source and thought that it might actually be generated internally. It occurred to me that it could be the Mega Red so I broke open a capsule and sure enough, the thick, shockingly red oil smelled exactly like my phantom odor. I can't begin to imagine what my insides look like, let alone smell like--other body by-products also smell like krill oil. Regular Omega-3 fish oils have not had this effect (those that are marketed as having no fishy aftertaste). I found this nasty sensation very disturbing. |
