I was surprised to see the the super negative comments over a laundry detergent. So, I decided to speak up and let you guys know what I see.

I have a front loader machine that uses HE soap. I am looking at my early empty HE CHEER bottle at this moment. Absolutely NO specific ingredients at all. It states in one line on the back of the bottle "Includes biodegradable surfactants (anionic and nonionic) and enzymes." I mention this because some reviewers are upset about the label on the 7th Generation bottle. Let's now look at that one...

First off, the bottle of 2X 7th Gen is 1/3 the size and so the label area is considerable smaller. The larger CHEER bottle did not bother to tell us what things are inside but the little 7th Gen. bottle took the time to inform us consumers. It is NOT difficult to get to. Turn the bottle over, look at the back of it. The lower left side has an arrow and states to PEEL BACK LABEL, which it peels quite easily. It has a nice, easy to read list of ingredients for you to scrutinize over; feel free to Google away.

The concern over the "sodium laureth sulfate" should be researched if you are concerned that you are going to eat the soap. The ingredient is used to make the bubbles. The warnings I found for this ingredient were ALL for ingesting or long exposure from cosmetics and shampoos. I saw no warnings if used in laundry detergent and even if used in shampoo, there is no evidence to support that the trace amount will harm you. There are warning to discontinue using toothpastes that contain it as...you may be ingesting the substance and the last I checked... it is not wise to ingest ANY toothpastes or soaps for that matter.

The label is clear on how to use the product; it is easy to read and large enough print to read without strain. They pack a lot of data on the little bottle compared to the 100fl oz bottle of CHEER I have sitting next to it.

I have washed all colors and different degrees of dirtiness...not yet have I seen any tainting of colors or dirt left behind! I chose the Free & Clear as I am sensitive to some smells.

At this point in time I have to wonder what is going on with the other users?? It may be something in their water is reacting to the ingredients? Water Temperature? Mixed colors in the same load and did not notice that one would fade? Maybe someone added bleach to that load???

There are lots of reason a product may not work. I really do not understand all the low ratings and comments as I have not seen anything that they are. I wash everything on Cold water with the exception of whites but I think I will give that a try too and see if there really is a difference using hot or cold water. Maybe that is another myth I have been clinging too. I will give it test next load of white socks with the 7th Generation here and see what happens!

I am very pleased with the product. If I remember I will let you know what happens with the soap, no bleach, cold water, and dirty whites.

6/11/2009 update here!

Have been washing multi-colored loads now just to test this soap out! I am pleased to inform that not one...not one color is fading, there are no weird spots showing up and my whites are still white!

With washing the load of dirty white socks in cold with only this detergent, I find the whites are still white. The really dirty heel of the sock that was stained for months already is still "dingy" but what can we expect? That is why they make additive to remove ground in dirt.

So conclusion:

This product works. Colors are still bright. Whites are still white. No spotting or staining and I have been TRYING to get things to bleed. I do not see what the others are doing to get such horrid results in their wash. I am the average person with a dog and cat outside. I have horses and my jeans get nasty at the bottom of the legs. I spill juices and food on my shirts and still... they come out clean! I even used it today as a pre-treatment to a blood stain from 2 days ago. Came out clean clean clean!

I like the smaller bottles for storage and for use. I like the dye free and smell free quality. I like that it takes a VERY LITTLE to wash my clothes AND it cleans my stuff.

Hope this helps with your decision to try or not to try.

Best wishes.

This is Seventh Generation's newest laundry detergent, made for high efficiency washers. It works well in standard washers as well, though, and you don't have to lug around all of the extra weight due to added water.

I have tried both the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender scent and the White Flower & Bergamot Citrus Scent. I love both, but especially the White Flower & Bergamot Citrus, but I think that the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender will be more popular. I have seen reviews in which many people dislike the bergamot scent...it is very bergamot-y, so if you're not sure you'd like that, I'd go with the more conventional eucalyptus-lavender scent. Both work equally well in getting your clothes clean!

The 32 ounce bottle size is perfect, lasts a long time, for an HE washer 32 loads and for a standard washer, about 21 loads.

This product is free of dyes and scented with essential oils and botanical extracts! That is one of my favorite features---goodbye to nasty, fake, chemical smells; hello to subtly scented clean clothes!

The detergent is non-toxic, biodegradable, contains no optical brighteners or petroleum-based cleaners or phosphates. It is safe for septic tanks and gray water systems. It fights stains with non-animal-derived enzymes. It leaves no residues that could irritate sensitive skin. It works in water at temperatures from 45 degrees to 145 degrees Fahrenheit.

The amount of suds this detergent produces is very low (just be aware), but it works GREAT!

You can find out more about Seventh Generation at their web site, seventhgeneration.com. They are the nation's leading brand of non-toxic and environmentally safe household products.

I have four kids and have been using this detergent for over a year now in our front loader machine. It is ultra concentrated and with a front loader, the label says to 1/3 less of it, so it goes a long way. I absolutely love this product! As a matter of fact, it gets stains out so well that I now use it to pretreat stains. I filled a squirt bottle with half detergent and half water, shook it up and spray it on the stains about ten minutes before I throw the clothes into the washer. I have never had a problem with this liquid harming my colors. There is no bleach in this product as there is in the powdered detergent, so I cannot see why one other reviewer has had problems. I use it with the baby's clothes, darks, whites, and colors and have never had a problem with it discoloring clothes and I would definately know that if I pretreat stains with it. Our clothes come out so clean, and I know that I am keeping my kids safe without using chemicals. Thank you Seventh Generation!!

Earlier this year, I decided to try to move our household away from toxic chemical cleaners, who wants to inhale that stuff? One of my go-to products now is 7th Gen's Free& Clear Laundry Detergent. Not only does it do a great job on our clothes, I dilute it with water to spot clean my light beige wall to wall carpeting and car upholstery. Puppy accidents, coffee stains, and even wayward spaghetti sauce have come out, without scrubbing or discoloring the fabric. Love it.

This is my first post on here. We're used this laundry soap for two years and have never had a problem with it changing the color of fabrics. My wife sews and washes fabric off the bolt, and we have NEVER had trouble with this detergent. It cleans well and lets us feel good about our purchase's impact on the enviroment. My best guess is that water temperature, and not detergent, had something to so with the fading mentioned by other reviews. It may be good to check the color fastness of your laundry before washing. Of course, I'm a physisict, not a chemist, so do with my advice what you will. We are using a front loaded machine that requires High Efficiency detergents.
Best Laundry Soap!

Both my husband and I have sensitive skin, so if we wear clothes washed in detergent, we have itchiness and skin irritation. We also don't like the smell of most of the detergents out there, either.

We LOVE this product. It's laundry soap, so it doesn't irritate your skin. Since it's twice as concentrated, it helps stretch the dollar. And the smell is AMAZING! Because of this product (as well as their fabric softener) I enjoy doing the laundry. The scents are light and natural and the clothes feel cleaner, rather than with detergents, where there's a thick layer of residue on the clothes. If I have badly stained or stinky laundry, I use Seventh Generation's non-chlorine bleach to whiten my whites and brighten my brights.

Great for blankets, sheets, towels and clothes - the all around best product I have ever used. This product, as well as the other Seventh Generation products I have made reference to, is something I would suggest to anyone and everyone.
Excellent Laundry Detergent

Something's a little strange with the number of 1-star reviews of this product. I've been using 7th Generation laundry detergent (and fabric softener, glass cleaner, and dishwashing detergent) for over a year. I have never noticed any fabric fading as a result of using this laundry detergent. On the contrary, clothes come out looking and smelling clean. I have three kids so it's not as if I am only laundering clothes that are already mostly clean. Our kids play multiple sports and their clothes are heavily soiled. At the time of this writing here's the rating distribution: twenty 5 stars, six 4 stars, two 3 stars, two 2 stars, and eleven 1 stars. Note the upward distribution of reviews when considering 2 to 5 star ratings - it is statistically unusual to have so many 1 star ratings with this otherwise high rating distribution. Frankly, I question the authenticity of at least some of the 1 star reviews. This product, in my experience, deserves a 5 star rating. By the way, the reason I started using this product was because my mother-in-law is sensitive to fragrance - this laundry detergent passes her chemically-sensitive nose.
Seventh Generation Laundry Liquid Detergent

This is an excellent detergent, with no perfumes or harmful
chemicals; and, this 32 fluid oz. container of liquid detergent is
the perfect size for most laundry cabinets; and, it is not too heavy a weight to handle, easily. I give this Seventh Generation liquid detergent the highest rating.
Clean and clean smelling clothes

Review Date: January 13, 2010
Reviewer: SP,
The bottles are very small and light as well as easy to pour without spilling. Also, the top of the spout has a catch rim that allows the extra in the cup to easily flow back in, conserving detergent. I used to use the big Costco containers with the pour spouts, but these little bottles are a lot easier and less messy. (A good thing considering how hard it is to clean up thick liquid detergent) So, small packaging is good for the environment and easier to use.

Of course how is it as detergent? Well, clothes come out clean and clean smelling. Whites, colors, hot, cold, all in a front loader washer. I usually add a small amount of Oxiclean to the wash as well.
Wonderful high efficiency laundry product

I have a front loading Maytag Neptune machine that takes HE detergent. I have been using Seventh Generation products since I first bought the machine 5 years ago to do the linens from my massage therapy practice. I wanted to keep my practice "green" while taking care of the special needs of my patients with chemical sensitivities as well as sanitizing my linens and getting them really clean of my massage oils and creams. I was always very happy with the Seventh Generation line of laundry products and kept using it for my personal laundry even after I was disabled and had to give up my massage practice. I've had no complaints whatsoever. It's really a wonderful high efficiency laundry product.

First of all, I absolutely adore the subtle scent! As an aromatherapist, lavender is high on my list of essentials. I use it whenever I can. The scent of Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent, Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender Scent, 2x Ultra 50 fl oz (1 is delightful ~ light, fresh and true. It does not smell perfumey so it is acceptable for even the laundry needs of the males in your home. My bed linens smell divine! I've always rubbed a little lavender essential oil onto my bedding to induce more restful sleep anyway and it's very nice to have the fresh and healing fragrance of lavender from this laundry detergent linger. Furthermore, I myself have chemical sensitivities and Seventh Generation leaves no chemical residues that would normally cause me skin irritation and headache.

However, some folks, such as a few of my massage patients, are extremely sensitive to any kind of fragrance, natural or otherwise, so for my massage practice linens I would use Seventh Generation Liquid Laundry 2x Ultra Concentrate, Free & Clear, 32-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6), also with great success.

Perhaps more importantly, Seventh Generation is truly high performance. My multi-colored loads always come out beautiful and not one color has ever faded or run. My whites come out bright and white. I recently had some fairly soiled clothes from a small gardening project and I'm thrilled to report that everything, including white socks with ground-in dirt, came clean. I can't be more satisfied with the results.

Lastly, Seventh Generation does not contain animal products, NPEs, chlorine, phosphates, alcohol,EPA pollutants or dyes. And it is made in the good old USA!!! It's a great value at Amazon too, much less expensive here than at my health food store or the more progressive grocery stores like my local Publix which also carry Seventh Generation projects.

For my money, Seventh Generation is the way to meet all of my laundry needs.
The best detergent I have used to date!

Often, when one goes green, efficiency and effectiveness both are sacrificed. Not with this product! One of my kiddoes developed an allergy to the detergents we were buying in the store. I tried several brands with no success (serious contact dermatitis). Finally, I came across 7th generation on Amazon. Man, what a difference. The detergent is high efficiency (which can still be hard to find at the supermarket, gets the clothes super clean and leaves no fragrance, film, or any sign that it did not completely rinse out. My boy's reaction is gone completely! This will be my fourth order - I am hooked. Next step is to try their paper products... :)

All the best,

Jay

In our household, we try to use products that are good for the earth as much as we can. With the amount of laundry we do, it made sense to think about a way to reduce the pollution we add to the water. Cost-wise, Seventh Generation products are more expensive than other laundry detergents, but they are the only one that can stand up to their claim of being earth friendly. Along with being highly concentrated, they don't use dye or perfumes, and it's really an excellent product. It works well, too. Our clothes are as clean as ever!

I have bad skin allergies, and I have tried every detergent. They all worked the same, they make me break in hives bad. Until my fried at work told me about 7th generation. It has no dyes and no perfumes. I was alittle worried about the price, but I got some and used it. WOW, no icthy skin and hives. YAY!! I use it all the time now. I don't care if costs too much. The detergent works great as in stains and getting the clothes clean effectively.

We have been using this product for about 5 years with a series of HE front-loading washers. We only wash in cold water and everything (including our toddler's and infant's messes!) comes out great. I can count a handful of times either child has permanently stained something, which I attribute to this product and having a newer washing machine. I love it has no added fragrances and it has never bothered either young child's skin.

Seventh Generation's laundry detergent works great. It's good for the environment and Seventh Generation does not test on animals! I am a huge animal lover and won't support the companies that test on animals. Well, that leaves me to stop buying from so many companies (Proctor and Gamble, SC Johnson, Kimberly-Clark, Church & Dwight, etc). I love 7th generation and HIGHLY recommend their products. I'll be a customer for life.

I recently ordered a pack of six of 7th generation Laundry detergents bottles and have been pleasantly surprised. It has a mild, natural odor, unlike some of the major brands. It cleans just as well as other major brands; something I've always been concerned about. The mild odor is fabulous as my daughter and myself get migraines from strong, perfume type detergents. That it is environmentally friendly is simply a bonus!

I ordered this product about 5 months ago, and we still have a couple of bottles left of it. We do about a load of laundry per day in our extra large front loading machine and I love this detergent. I use it on all our clothes and this is the only detergent that has not bothered either of my sons' sensitive skin (they seem to be triggered by different things and I could never find one that worked for both of them). I love the smell of the lavender and everyone I have asked is impressed by the small amount needed to clean a large amount of clothes. My clothes are clean and smelling good, we are helping the environment and everyones' skin is clear! I love this detergent!

Seventh Generation products are great for the skin and the environment. I was getting rashes from my previous detergents I was using. I tried ever kind of detergent to get rid of the rashes as I knew it was when I put on my cloths it would get more irritated. Some other detergents did work but I did not like the non-sented smell. I tried this detergent and I no longer have rashes from my cloths and it smells great. People say this is expensive but I would say it is much cheaper than tide and more concentrated. 6 bottles last me 3 months for $31, I know I was dropping allot more than that for other brands.

THANKS SEVENTH GENERATION!
Great detergent, but don't buy it here

I've been using Seventh Gen detergent for a few years now, and it works great. I've never had any of the problems others complain about (color leaching, funny smells, etc). My clothes get clean, and i don't use dead dinosaurs to do it. It also doesn't trigger my eczema, or even irritate my sensitive skin in the slightest. I even used this to wash my newborn baby's clothes and blankets, and it was fine.

That said: don't buy it here. First, this is a six-pack of small bottles. Recycling is great and all, but reducing is better. Buy one large bottle (unless you have arthritis or a wrist injury and can't lift a large bottle) instead. Second, the packaging is insufficient. My order arrived with two of the bottles sporting cracked lids, the box soaked through with detergent, and a mildly annoyed UPS guy trying to wipe his hands clean on a rag.

(A relative of mine complains about Seventh Gen detergent not rinsing clean from her laundry, but i watched her do laundry and she puts in about 3x as much as is actually needed. I tried to explain 'concentrated' and 'high efficiency' to her, but she wouldn't listen.)

We've used this detergent for a while so decided to add it to my subscribe-and-save orders. As another reviewer said, it seems to get our clothes as clean as any other detergent and has not caused any allergic reactions. I love going green and love the convenience of subscribe-and-save. We pay about as much for it that way as by lugging it home from our local wholesale store. Just wish it would come in bigger containers, might also cut down on the cost. Thanks 7th generation for a great product and thanks Amazon for another pocket-book and time saving option.

I do wish that I could get a larger bottle instead of the smaller bottles because then I'd be reducing the amount of plastic bottle creation that I'm contributing to. It is a good value, price-wise, to buy it from Amazon and it's an even better value with the subscribe and save feature. But I still wish I could subscribe and save with bigger bottles instead.

I've been using Seventh Generation for the last several years mainly for environmental reasons, but last Sept. we ran out and I had to buy something other than this. My daughter broke out in a rash and odd bumps a few days later. When I switched back to Seventh Generation a week later, the rash cleared up on its own and we haven't seen it since. I ended up using up the other stuff on my husband's jeans. Even though it is not advertised as hypo-allergenic, the lack of artificial scents and additives makes a difference.

I probably do not do everything I should to help with the enviroment, but I try to do what I can where I can. I purchased this to see how effective a natural product can be on my clothes and I was very impressed.

I chose the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender scent. It was not as strong as others have commented, so that was a relief. I am not a huge fan of heavily scented "infused" clothing, but I do want them to smell fresh and clean, and this product met that need.

I have not had any issues with colors fading. I do use an HE washer, and this product met it's claim about it not "over-sudsing".

Overall, seems like a good value and I will consider purchasing again when my stock of 6 bottles runs out.

I have been using this detergent for a while now. It has a nice smell right out of the washer, but unfortunately the scent kind of breaks down when you dry the clothes. The laundry still has a mild fresh scent but nothing like the scent from the bottle. I guess if I want a stronger scent I can always just put an herb satchet or something in the dryer. The detergent doesn't really seem to differ in terms of cleaning power from the Tide I used to use. I will definitely continue to use natural detergents, every little thing you do to help the environment adds up.

This product seems to work comparable to other products on the market for similar intended use. I like the idea of buying earth-friendly products, so I'll continue to use. The only complaint I have is that one of the bottles leaked during transit, so either the transport company is not handling the box with care, or the packing that Seventh Generation does is not robust enough for transit.

I read some of the reviews on this page about how clothes came out tie-dyed looking after using the detergent. I have no idea why that would be. My clothes come out perfect. I use this detergent for both adult and baby clothes. Everything comes out of the baby clothes without an issue. I wash colors, towels, sheets, you name it. The only thing I can think of is that I always wash in cold water and I have a front loading, HE machine. There is NO reason to wash in warm water when using this detergent. It is formulated to be used with cold. Plus, if you are buying this for the environmental aspects, warm water wastes more resources!

My toddlers have been rashy with most other eco- or otherwise laundry soaps. I use half the recommended amounts with an extra rinse cycle. This particular soap has been very effective as a cleaner without degrading the fabrics or dyes. Body-fluid drenched blankets and clothes are nearly a weekly occurrence with 2 kids under 3 yrs, and my hubby is a weekend garage-hound usually encrusted with a toxic combo of testosterone-validating substances, so we really put laundry detergents to the test. I would prefer on big container of several hundred ounces rather than many small bottles. Other than that, it is a great value espesh price per load when compared to other eco- brands.
Good product for you and the environment - but not as concentrated as its name implies

I am always concerned about how much chemical stuff we put into our bodies and our environment. I am glad to recommend this product. It works quite well, so this is the second time I am ordering it. There is only one thing I want to inform others: Although marketed as "Concentrated Liquid", it is really not that concentrated. The name "2x Ultra Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent" seems to imply it is twice as concentrated as the original one. It is NOT. It does look thicker than the original one, but I found that I use almost the same amount - maybe a little less.

This use to be my very favorite laundry cleaner but I will have to stop using it. They changed the formula which has almost no scent now and honestly the clothes stink now and do not come clean. The lavender mix is horrible and no one I have met actually likes it. A great shame but I found meyer's brand to be very good in exchange.
Be careful using on colors

I have used this product for over a year so was happy to find it cheaper at Amazon than in the grocery store.

I use this brand for 2 reasons. I am concerned about the environment and look for affordable eco-friendly products for household uses. I also have skin sensitivities to chemicals in many products. I used to use Tide Free, but, at some time they must have changed their formula because now it still gives me itchy skin. I had to stop using fabric softeners completely and Seventh Generation Free & Clear is the only detergent I've tried that doesn't affect me.

As for how it works... It does a pretty good job on whites if they aren't heavily soiled. I have had problems with some colors running, especially if not immediately put in the dryer after the washing is completed. I now don't use the full amount of liquid on colors and add an eco-friendly laundry booster if the load is extra dirty. This detergent doesn't do much for stain removal so I still pretreat stains with Quick N Brite. 7th Gen works OK for us but our clothes aren't usually heavily soiled. I will continue to use this product until a better and afforable brand comes along that also is eco and skin friendly.

The items did arrived quickly and intact without any leaks.
Seventh Generation Laundry-White Flower+Bergamot

It seems to clean well, but I would love more scent as I find it too mild.
Good product but not exactly what I ordered

Get this: I ordered the White Flower & Bergamot Citrus scent. What I received was the Free & Clear (unscented) in a box marked as containing the Blue Eucalyptus & Lavender!!! Who's running the packing department??? All of that aside, I'm keeping the unscented because I think this laundry detergent does a decent job (I've used the eucalyptus/lavender scent before) and it's environmentally friendly. My rating is based mainly on the packing mix-up. Amazon or Seventh Generation--get your act together!!
Good but not great

I bought this detergent as a natural alternative to the commercial chemical laden products. It does the job okay, but could clean better. For most of our clothes it works just fine. My son works construction and comes home with really filthy clothes on a regular basis. This product does not work very well on his clothes. I have 2 bottles left and will be ordering something else when this runs low.
Not suitable for soiled clothes

I normally use either Nellie's Laundry Soda or Mountain Green Free & Clear, but I didn't order my refill in time. So, I decided to give Seventh Generation a try. This product does not clean soiled clothes at all ( kids clothes ). I gave the product a second try and soaked soiled clothes overnight, and still, there were no improvements. For clothes that are not soiled, I see no difference between this product and other natural products I used. I'm going back to using Nellie's or Mountain Green.

Subscription Service Review, Small Product Size

I love this product and use it as our main laundry detergent. However this size is really small. I was expecting a bulk discount due to the subscription service, but this isn't really a discount when considering product size. This is about 1/2 or 1/3 of the size I normally buy at the store. FYI...
Not a fan of the detergent

I am a huge Seventh Generation fan, but the laundry detergent falls short. The clothes did not seem freshly washed. I understand that the natural components are the reason; however, I like my freshly laundered clothes to smell...um, well...fresh. I just didn't feel that my clothes were clean. I'll be going back to good ole toxic Tide...

Supposedly, this product helps protect the environment. I'm all for that, which is why I gave this product 2 stars. However, when it comes to actually cleaning clothes, this "detergent" is worthless. I am certain that I would get very similar results with water alone. Stains and even food smells from my cooking attire remained virtually intact. I bout this detergent at Whole Foods, and it was not cheap.
Clean clothes vs. clean environment... Until a better medium is available, I will continue using Tide. Sorry, environment.
Seemed to work alright as detergent, but badly damaged some colored items

Before it ruined a couple of brightly colored linen shirts, I was reasonably happy with this detergent. It's fairly expensive, but allegedly "green" and worked pretty well. (It's hard to really compare the details of detergent efficiency. They either basically work, or fail to work.)

But then it faded the colors of a pair of shirt. And it did so quite oddly, given then a tie-dyed look. Faded in places, not in others. Those shirts had been fine in other detergent washings previously.
WARNING: Definitely RUINS Certain Colored Items

This detergent performs great in terms of cleaning, leaving no scent/residue, and of course for benefiting the environment. Unfortunately, it also has a terrible side affect on certain colored items -- it ruins them!

I ran 3-4 loads of colored items before I realized the pattern of ruined items was due to the detergent. Many colored items are just fine, but 1-2 items per load were being ruined -- colors severely faded and streaked -- literally creating a "tye-died" look on what had previously been solid colors.

So, now I am using this detergent only on whites, and will definitely not be ordering again. I honestly find it just unacceptable that a company would market a product with clear eveidence that it ruins customers' clothes. (Also, after I saw this problem, I checked the reviews on [...], and customers there also reported this problem!)
Detergent not what it seems

I bought Seven Generations laundry detergent since I have eczema. They are so proud that they list ingredients however you have to pull off the top label on the product to see them. When I got home I was surprised to learn this product has sodium laurel sulphate in it. I was told by dermatologists and allergists to never use anything with this in it. They need to put their product ingredients in plain view so they can be seen. When I complained to the company they wrote back they were sorry I didn't like the "dishwasher soap". Not happy with company or service. Wouldn't buy again.
Not good for large loads, stinky or soiled clothing

Review Date: February 14, 2009
Reviewer: Norseman,
Being green concious... we purchased this product. We are a military family that has many large loads of laundry that are stinky and rather soiled from dirt and other debris. This detergent gets no stains out and still leaves the stench! You must use more than the regular amount for a large/extra large load according to the directions for useage on the back as well. It is by far the worst detergent that i have ever purchased. And very expensive for the amount of detergent that comes in the bottle in my opinion. I have tried other products like, Mrs. Myers and ran into the same problem. Citra Suds makes a good detergent, and Arm and Hammer makes a good natural (not organic) detergent that works very well!

If you have little boys who like to paint all over themselves, get dirty or like me get stuff everywhere this is NOT the detergent for you.
I noticed that everything was coming out stained after I started to use this. Too bad they cant make a product that works!!! AND I was using spray N wash....had to go back to ALL free and clear.
NOT for the Environmentally Conscious

As far as laundry detergents go, it is impossible for ANY liquid laundry detergent to be very "green." The amount of fossil fuels spent on the transportation of water needed to make laundry detergent in liquid form is very unnecessary and harmful to the environment. Please purchase a similar product in powder form. I would expect more from Seventh Generation than to lead consumers to think that they are actually doing a good thing by endorsing this product.

If you want a better understanding of this type of thing, read "Cradle to Cradle."
Doesn't get clothes clean

Since there is no added fragrance, it is easy to tell that sweaty clothes still smell after I pull them out of the wash. It also doesn't seem to get simple stains out of fabric, so our dish towels look like they have never been washed and dirt stays on the cuffs of trousers.
What a Joke!

We bought this product recently. I was unimpressed with the cleaning. After looking further I saw that Seventh Generation had been caught for not disclosing all of the ingredients in their products. Consumer reports had an article on this.
Ironically, the company and its President, Mr. Hollander, brag about how their product discloses all of its ingredients, yet they don't even know the ingredients.
This is because Seventh Generation doesn't manufacture anything themselves. They outsource it, to who knows maybe a company in China. The bottom line is they don't know what is in it since they don't make it. They are simply a marketing company. Don't buy into the hype and be ripped off.
You can buy Tide Free & Clear or Method Products for a lot less. Unlike Seventh Generation, they make their own products and know what is in it.
Expensive "tie dye"

After reading the reviews, I realized that my beautiful new pima cotton pajamas were "tie dyed" by this detergent and that I hadn't done anything wrong with the washing instructions!

I wasn't impressed by the efficacy of this product, AND to now know that it also ruins clothing!!?? I just purchased and have yet to wash a couple of new dark colored pima cotton jerseys, and I am SO THANKFUL that I read these reviews before putting them in a wash with a Seventh Generation detergent.

I will reserve the remainder of this product for my whites only and not buy this product in the future.

I washed a vibrant yellow picnic tapestry in this detergent. I removed it from the dryer to find it severely faded. I mean it was so drastically faded that it brought a tear to my eye. I would not trust this detergent on any colored item that you care about!

I have a large family that does at least 1 to 2 loads of laundry a day. This detergent is fairly expensive in comparison to other non-organic detergents but we justified the expense because it's important to us to be environmentally conscientious. I have washed several loads with this detergent now and have noticed a few things. The first 2 or 3 loads came out smelling bad so I had to rewash them even though they weren't particularly large loads. I thought perhaps we weren't using enough detergent and increased the amount to the maximum amount allowed on their measuring lid. That seemed to work alright for the next 3 loads. I then had to wash a load of whites that had a coffee soaked towel in it. The load came out literally smelling like feces. I rewashed the load with some color safe bleach because I try to avoid chlorine whenever possible. It still wreaked of feces. In fact, my entire laundry room smelled of it. I rewashed the load with chlorine bleach and finally the smell was gone. The very next load I put in was colors, not particularly dirty, put in the maximum amount of detergent, and it too came out smelling of feces. Its vile. I've never had this happen with any other detergent I've used. We consistently have to use double or triple the amount of detergent than we normally have to use, rewash loads multiple times, and use additives like bleach, that we wouldn't normally have to use in order for our laundry to smell clean. Hardly any of our loads of laundry are heavily soiled. There's only one grown man in the entire household. The most offensive smelly thing in the laundry is usually a perfume spritzed shirt from one of the teenage girls, which by the way, the detergent often fails to remove the smell of. I will never be purchasing this detergent again. It is a complete waste of money and the company ought to be fined or something for advertising their product as environmentally friendly.

When we received the product two of the containers were broken open and all over the contents of the box. The deal is not very good when you loose two bottles in transport.
