I knew i needed a humidifier, as i'm just not used to the dry air of east coast winters. But after shopping around on amazon for warm mist humidifiers, i was horrified by the reviews. Every humidifier seemed to be loud, leaky, and a hassle. I ended up getting this one because of the relatively low price, thinking that if it was as bad as all the others, at least i wouldn't have spent too much on it.

I have no complaints.

On the low setting, it's about as loud as a pot of water boiling in the next room. On the high setting, it might compete with a pot of water boiling in the same room. Every once in a while it gets a bit talkative, but that's rare and doesn't last long. I'm a light sleeper, and this unit never wakes me up.

On the low setting, a full tank of water lasts a little over 24 hours. On the high setting, it goes through in about 8 to 9 hours, perfect to run overnight.

The auto-shutoff works just fine, so i don't even bother turning it off before i leave the house.

It is a bit annoying to clean the unit, but that has a lot to do with the tap water here being less than perfectly clean. We switched to using filtered water, and now the humidifier is actually our way of knowing when to change the filter. When there's build-up on the heating element, the filter isn't working as well anymore.

The daily maintenance takes no more than a few minutes. The weekly maintenance takes longer, but that's mainly because you throw some of the pieces in to soak. It's maybe 10 minutes of effort, plus however long you want to soak the pieces.

In all, i'm very glad i purchased this unit. (And the water tank isn't nearly as blue as it looks in the picture.)

Reviewer: Annie,
I purchased the vicks cool mist humidifier (v3100) while visiting my family in Utah for the holidays. I had a sore throat and that mixed with the heater running and the already very dry air and i was getting up to get a drink 4 times a night. the first night i spent with the humidifier i didn't get up at all. i decided to leave it there and use it every time i visit, summer or fall. and i liked having a humidifier so much i bought a warm mist one, the v745a for my chicago apartment. here is a comparison of the two.

i bought the cool mist for the desert because it was cheaper and will only be used a few weeks a year but will be both summer and winter. it does blow a lot of cool air and will be especially nice in the summer. some people found it quite loud but i thought it was reasonable and used it on the high setting. but i am also used to sleeping with a fan on during the summer. i liked the fact that its shape is lower to the ground making it difficult to tip over. and the seal for the water tank is easier to open and close all the way to prevent leaks. but even after one week's use at night the filter is already more yellow than i expected. if i was using it every day i would have to change it very regularly. it also does move a lot of air like i said before, but the vents are low and it seemed like it was blowing all that moist air right under the bed.

i bought the warm mist humidifier for my apartment because i will only be using it in the winter and didn't want the cold air when my heater is aready working so hard. and i figured it would be more useful during cold season because of the attached medicine cup. it is also for medium/large rooms while the cool mist is for smal/medium so i could move it to my living room if needed. and because i saw the filter on the cool mist got so dirty so fast i liked the fact that this one had no filter, no parts to replace. just weekly cleaning. and the cost difference between this one and the cool mist is about the cost of one filter replacement. it makes very little difference in terms of air temperature, does not heat it up as much as i thought it would, vs the cool mist which did make the room quite a bit cooler. i like the fact that the steam comes out of the top instead of under the bed and it is more quiet than the cool mist even when on the high setting. it does have automatic shut off so i don't have to worry about it boiling dry. i did some research online about warm vs cool humidifiers before purchasing them, and many recommended cool mist for children because of burn risk from using the warm. even after being on all night the unit is cool to the touch and it has a cooling chamber so even the steam that comes out is unlikely to burn. the only way i think a child could injure themselves with this unit would be if they tipped it over, took it apart and touched the actual heating unit because of the auto shut off. my husband guessed the warm mist might take more electricity to run but we'll have to see about that.

overall i am a little happier with the warm mist because i need it for winter, it is quieter and needs to filters replaced. but they are both excellent and inexpensive and once you get one you will wonder why you waited so long. (and by the way the cool mist is $29.99 at target and the warm is $34.99, sorry amazon)
Great humidifier!

This humidifier has been a life-saver. I really like that it's easy to clean and maintain (although the build-up that accumulates on the heat element is a bit hard to remove), I've never been shocked by it, it's simple to use, and the materials are sturdy.
I had one previously that was terrible - it was the thinnest plastic ever and leaked constantly. I have had no problems with this humidifier except that the first one I had got a hole in it when I dropped it (on to a ceramic tiled floor from a few feet up), so after hastily replacing it with the cheap one that gave me problems, I quickly ordered up a duplicate of my original humidifier, and have been happy ever since. I've had this brand and model for 2 years now.

Reviewer: E. A. Jones,
Last winter when my husband and I needed a humidifier we had a lot of trouble finding a warm mist humidifier, which is the kind we prefer. We found this one in a half-opened box at a retail store and grabbed it, and were surprised at how great it worked!

It's very easy to use - just fill the tank and place it in the unit. The tank even has a handle on the bottom of it to make it easier to carry, as a full tank is pretty heavy. We have one in our bedroom next to the bed. Within seconds you'll hear and see mist generated. There are two speeds, high and low: on low a full tank will last 2-3 nights, on high it lasts 1-2. The filter parts to clean come off easily and some parts can be put in the dishwasher to clean. It's pretty compact, too, so it won't take up a whole table.

I love using a humidifier when I have a cold, as it helps clear congestion and soothes my throat. A humidifier is a necessity for me. We bought a second one from Amazon but our cats broke it within a few weeks. We'll be buying a replacement when the weather gets cooler!

The tank does drip easily when lifted out of the unit so you'll want to put the humidifier on a towel or something, just to protect your furniture. The water deposits on the heating element will build up and are sometimes hard to get off, but it hasn't affected the way the unit works.
Great product!

I got this humidifier over a week ago and I've run it almost continuously in our bedroom to help with the cold that my husband, my baby and myself had. I was a bit unsure whether to get a warm or cold mist humidifer, but am glad I chose warm and am glad I chose this one. It works great - is super easy to fill, simple to use and has auto-shut off so I never have to worry about it running out of water and overheating or something. It helped with our congestion - especially my little girl. Considering we live in Los Angeles and it is so dry normally, I plan on using this all winter long - if not beyond that. Highly recommend.

We have had this product for a few years now. It works great. I read other reviews that mention noise. Well, it is boiling watter to generate the steam, so it does create some noise. But I have had other warm humidifiers that were noiser. So I would say that this is really not noisy compared to same type of warm humidifiers out there. And it has two different levels for low or high steam output. The low doesn't really do any good. I use the high all the time and it does put out plenty of hot steam in the room. The water container is very easy to carry and re-fill with water. It has handle on the top and bottom of the container. From the time you turn it on until steam comes out is about 2-3 minutes. I pulled it out a month ago and started using it. It wasn't working as good as last year. So I opened it up and there was ton of calcium deposits and miniral around the heating element. It was very easy to take it apart and clean out the area near heating element. I even poured some CLR (calcium, Lime, Rust) remover in there and completely cleand it out. It works like new. I love mine and in fact i came here to this site to find this unit and order a second one. I would highly recommend this unit.
Amazing!

I always use a humidifier during the winter. Long-standing sinus trouble, plus, dry air tends to give me nose bleeds in the winter.

This is the best humidifier I've ever had.

- multi-settings for level of steam
- medicine cup for humidified sinus/cold meds
- easy fill; you aren't likely to make a mess!
- quiet!!!

First of all, the Vicks 745A is a warm mist humidifier, so it won't expose you to more germs like a cool mist humidifier will and you can use regular tap water.

I've had a big Bionaire warm mist humidifier for over 10 years, and it still works. It takes about 15 minutes to clean the scale, but I would have purchased another one. My child has claimed it, and so when I got pneumonia it was time to make my purchase.

The Vicks 745A is great. Yes, it doesn't hold much water, but a tankful will last for 10 hours on high and generates a lot of humidity (as much as my Bionaire). Unless in the depth of winter, I turn it on high for an hour or two before I go to bed, and then turn it on low for the night. On low, it will run for a day. Of course, it has an automatic shutoff.

I read the reviews about the noise and the cleaning problems, but those folks must not have had a warm mist humidifier before. The water is actually being boiled continuously, and the tank refills periodically. You will hear it, mostly white noise. The Vicks 745A is much quieter than my bigger/aged Bionaire, and it comes apart and cleans with ease. So once a week, you can literally rinse the scale away from the burner area and the steam funnel.

It also has handles on both ends of the tank for easy carrying and takes much less space on the nightstand than older models. It's a BUY!

This humidifier has gotten my kids through many colds, croup and asthma attacks. We've had the same machine for four years and I've never had any problems with it . . . . no water leakage or cleaning problems. I love that no replaceable filter is required and it can be cleaned out at home without having to worry about finding the right sized filter at the store. My daughter is sick right now and I just hooked it up, which reminded me that I wanted to add my review to contradict some of the negative reviews I read. This humidifier is a lifesaver (and sleepsaver)!

I bought this warm mist humidifier as a replacement for a Honeywell, which lasted 2 years and then stopped putting out steam, despite descaling the heating element. This Vicks machine is simpler to operate, no fancy control buttons with complicated directions for use so near the floor that you literally had to either lift off the floor, or sit down next to it. Then you needed a magnifying glass to read the instructions. This unit has 2 settings: Low & High. The cleaning of the heating unit is easy; however I would clean every 2-3 days if you live in a hard water locale. Adding the medication into the cup is very easy. All-in-all, a very nice unit. I recommend it.

Okay, I've had mine for 7 years and it just broke, I think. I'm buying another one right now because I've always thought it was a great product.

I was reading the other reviews about the 'daily and weekly' cleaning and I was flabbergasted. I had NO IDEA we were supposed to do it that often. I only cleaned it once a year - if that. Sure, the heating unit was pretty gross by the time I got to it, but seriously - daily?????

Anyway. It's quiet, it works, it's not ugly, and you can put smelling stuff in the little container in the top - any kind of oil to help you breathe or freshen up the room. It automatically shuts off (they all should!). It's a great product.

If my kids were coughing one night, I'd use it the next - or even in the middle of the night and it really did help them.

Excellent and not pricey

we bought this humidifier to put moisture into the air in our newborns room, 18months ago and we have been delighted with it. It is easier to fill, easy to take apart to clean and does not make alot of noise through the night. I am glad we did not spend alot of money on it and it seems to be working very well despite nightly use.

Just love this one. I had a Honeywell humidifier that was a real pain to take apart and clean. The Vicks comes apart easily and is easy to clean. And no filters involved! We have well water, so we take a few minutes each day to do the cleaning and stay ahead of any sediment or mineral buildup. On "low", it runs quietly enough to use in a small bedroom. Even on "high", there is only the sound of the water bubbling. I wish they made this in a larger size for larger rooms; I'd buy another.

I really love this humidifier. I've had numerous brands and humidifiers over the years and they all get the mineral build up. At minimum, this humidifier has been intelligently engineered to be able to take it apart and get to the areas that need to be cleaned. I use Vicks VapoSteam in mine and it really works like a champ. But you do have to clean it. The way it's all comes apart is what I like most. I put some CLR over the heating element, and just scrub the tower. If I use it everynight, I try to clean at least every two weeks. I've had mine three years and would buy one again in a minute!

Better than all other kinds of humidifier: Ultrasonic create white fog, Cold Humidifier need to change filter often, Electrolite output is not stable.

Easy to clean and noise level is managable at low level.

One tank of water can last for 24 hours at low level and 12 hour at high level.

This is the perfect unit for a bedroom or closed room. We heat our home with 3 woodstoves and use it in our bedroom. We fill it up nightly under the tub faucet and set it on low (first setting). It takes about a minute or two to get going. Makes a slight hissing sound. Very pleasant for us since the living room is right below our bedroom and it drowns out the sounds outside the bedroom. Set it on high and the hissing is louder and doubles the amount of moisture going into the air. You've got to remember, these units boil water and release the vapors into the air. They are not completely quiet. I like this one because it has an automatic shut-off.

I am very surprised by all the negative reviews of this product. I think we all know that finding a humidifier that actually works more than a year even with dutiful maintenance is rare. Why they can't just make humidifiers that do what they say they will is beyond me. I am recovering from the Honeywell HWM-331 which I purchased last year. I cleaned it regularly and was so pleased. It was my first warm mist model after always having cool mist. It was wonderful till it broke . In a matter of 5 days this season everything that could go wrong with it did. So back I was to investigating for a new one.

I live in a studio apartment and have a strong tendency to sinus infections/asthma. I chose this model for many reasons and am so pleased with it. The Honeywell I had had a 2 1/2 gallon tank and it needed to be changed daily. This model has a 1 gallon tank, covers the same square footage as the other and runs longer on that 1 gallon. On low it runs for 24 hours and on high it runs for 12. I run it all the time and have a humidity reader. I am always within the comfort zone. Only when it gets very cold out and very dry do I put it on high. Otherwise it stays on low. Yes, it does make a low, slight noise as it works but it is so minimal. Also, it doesn't make my apartment as warm as the other did.

Bottom line, no static, my allergies are great and the machine takes up little space as it works over my whole apartment. The nightlight is also appreciated for I always know it is working. There is no perfect model out there and no humidifier, no matter how good the quality, will keep all from getting sick, etc. And all warm mist models will get calcium buildup on the walls when used frequently. It goes with the territory. People are complaining about it with this model and I had the same problem with my previous Honeywell.

I recommend this Vicks model very highly. Keep on top of the easy maintenance and it will serve you well.

We have been using this humidifier for about 3 weeks now, almost daily, and it has held up well. My wife was worried about having a warm mist machine because of the risk of steam burns, but this unit mixes the steam with cool air from the room to effectively release a mildly warm mist into the room. We never even use the 2nd setting, we just stick with the low setting, and a tank of water will last at least 2 full nights.

We were given a cool mist humidifier for a baby shower and used it about a week before we realized that filter costs and cleaning would end up really wearing us out. Plus the cool mist machines breed bacteria and blow it into the air for your newborn to breathe. This was just the smarter choice, and no filters to replace weekly.

If your looking for a simple efficient machine, this is it. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and reliable every time. It also works with Vicks Vapo Steam, which is great if your infant suffers at night from congestion and breathing problems like ours.

Likewise, after researching humidifiers I felt very confused. I considered many models. I almost ordered the VICKS model with the two water tanks, then realized I could be disappointed for less money and ordered the $32-one tank model, I am pleasantly surprised:innovative design has easy fill water tank and medication reservoir. The whole thing comes apart for "easy" once a week cleaning [although I haven't actually done that yet]. Works better than fine-a big step forward from the humidifiers of yesteryear. AND auto shut off thrown in. It is larger than it looks in the picture-can handle a medium/large room [according to the box]. I keep it on the floor next to my bed to save the end table . "Night light" effect and sound not a problem. I have chosen to use tap water to save inconvenience and money. I something goes wrong-at these prices-I'll just replace it. My sinuses thank you VICKS!
Finally! A humidifer worth talking about.

I've been through four or five humidifiers in my life, all of which were quite forgettable (except the Holmes HM630-U, which was unforgettably awful). This is the first one that I've been really happy with.

The Vicks is quite a simple machine, but unusually well-designed, and does its job well. For example, everything locks into place with one sliding latch, making assembly and disassembly a breeze. Also, the heating element is shaped like a hockey puck, so any mineral buildup eventually flakes off. I haven't had to use descaler yet.

My take on the never-ending debate is that warm mist humidifiers are the way to go. Not only do they help warm up the room, but they are much easier to clean, and there is less risk of bacterial growth. I've made it a habit to soak mine in bleach whenever I do laundry, which is all the maintenance it seems to need.
Best product ever.

If there is anything I hate most about a humidifier, it is cleaning it weekly as I have very hard water. I have to say that this is by far, the easiest humidifier to clean that I have ever owned. Although it only lasts about 12 hours on high, I would much rather refill it more often, than stuggle to get the hard mineral build up off the heating element. So if you want an easy humidifier to clean, this is the one.

After reading number of reviews on this product I decided to buy it anyway. I have a larger, cold mist humidifier but for the bedroom I chose this one.I was worried about leaking water but nothing like that happened. All of the humidifiers have a spring mechanism on the bottom of the container and as long as this is set properly it shouldn't leak.
During the cold weather it feels good to have a warm mist. Kept the bedroom doors closed because of the small room capability of this unit. The light was just fine, not too bright to keep me awake. You can turn the unit in different direction if you don't like the light.
I kept the unit on a towel covered TV tray JIC it leaked but never did. The medicine cup is also a great feature. Very quiet operation. I am very happy with this humidifier.
Using in Iguana enclosure, achieving 75% humidity!

For people that keep tropical pets, the magic 80% humidity range is difficult to achieve. Our iguana is in a 8' tall by 4' deep by 6' wide enclosure with glass doors. Prior to purchasing this unit we have misters (like in the grocery store) that went on several times a day. The max humidity they could achieve was roughly 25%.

I put this unit in and we are almost past 75% humidity and that is measured about a foot from the top, below where he sits. I run it on high and only have to fill it once a day. Where he is sitting on the branches near the emitters there is a fine fog like mist that surrounds him. Its totally a jungle in there!

If you are going to use this for pets I recommend a large enclosure for one, this unit is pretty big, which is fine because it holds copious amounts of water. It will not fit in a 20 gallon tank for example. Also, you should be using non chlorinated water, chlorine gas is bad for the critters to breathe.

Overall it is performing quite well and our Ig is doing fine.

Thanks for reading my review.

Clears all that gum out, takes 10 minutes how lazy can you be. No bacteria cause the thing boils the water. Seriously, a great humidifier, works in the bedroom overnight. Keeps you healthy if you need a bit more water in the air. Simple, easy design. ALOHA!

We bought this humidifier 2 years ago to help cure my son's eczema (which it does, by the way). Since then we have bought 3 different humidifiers to have around the house and none of them are any good compared to this one. It has been incredibly durable, used in hotels across the entire country, used daily for 2+ winters now.

MOST IMPORTANT PRO:
The water vapor is always pure because it is from boiling water, you never have to worry about impurities and bacteria being pumped into your air like you do with cool mist humidifiers or humidifiers with wicking filters.

MOST IMPORTANT CON:
You can't leave this where your young children might knock it over. It has boiling water in it and will burn.

I love this humidifier and in the unlikely event that it ever stops working I will replace it with another one.
Works Well!

Good Little Unit

I've owned several humidifiers over the years. None last forever and with a warm mist unit after 4-5 years they get pretty skanky and probably should be replaced anyway.

The unit is small and stylish as humidifiers go. Does not have an adjustable dial to pick a certain humidity level, but any unit that I had in the past, I've just set the dial on the highest setting and left it there so having a dial is not a necessary option in my opinion.

This unit has two settings, low and high. Low is as quiet as any unit I've used. On the high setting it does make a little more noise than any other unit I've owned. It is not obnoxiously loud but if you have it right next to your bed and you are a light sleeper, you'd either want it on low or this may not be the unit for you. Having said that, on the high setting this unit does push out a lot of moisture. There is the possibility it is louder because it pushes out more moisture than other units but I have no way to know for sure.

A big plus for me is it is extremely easy to clean. The heating element is easy to get to and shaped in a way so you can easily get to every inch of it to get it clean.

Bottom line, for the price this is a great little machine. If it breaks down in 2 years, I'll buy another and if that one breaks down in two years, I'll still have saved money over a more expensive machine that lasts four years. I've never used one more than that long anyway. Save your money and buy this.

Water lasts as rated. On high it will last just over 12 hours. On low it lasts much longer. I bought two of them and they are both working great. If either breaks down in less than a year, I'll come back and add to this posting to report the problem. If there are no additional add-on postings here from me. Then the machines are working just fine.

We love this machine and I am currently buying a 2nd for my other daughter for when she needs one.(instead of moving from room to room).
I find this machine to be real quite. I've used it on my bedside table myself and had no issue with noise.

As for the sound, it makes a slight white noise sound from the water boiling, but I love it. It kind of sounds like a sleep machine so it helps me sleep better. The auto shut off feature is great as well. I've been using the unit on the high setting since the air is SO dry and I can tell a difference in the room already. I highly recommend this product.

Really like this product. For my small bedroom the water (filled to the max) can last 2 days if you use the low setting. The high setting is a bit too loud for me, but the low one is okay (I am pretty sensitive to noise but the low setting doesn't bother me at all). Haven't found anything wrong with it, yet.

I would suggest that you check your local grocery stores before buying on Amazon. Not that I regret my purchase, but soon after I got it, I saw exactly the same model in Fred Meyer, and it was sold for only $25.
Works Great...just like all the reviews said

I bought this for my young children who are always getting colds to replace thier old humidifier that broke. I love it! The water level can last all throughout the night even when on HIGH which is a problem I have had with others, it has a cute little night light on the knob which makes it easier to see in a dark room. It also has a medicine tank for adding Vicks vapo steam which is very valuable and also came with a lot of money saving coupons. The one drawback in my experience is it is VERY loud so if you are a light sleeper this may not be for you. Otherwise its a total thumbs up from me.

I have purchased and used few warm and cool mist vaporizers over the course of 47 plus years of being a wife/mother and a sinus sufferer. This is the best I ever had!
I am recomending it for its easy operation, good output of moisture, but also for its value for the money. I think my old Sunbeam and my Hankscraft were waisting electricity, lots of too hot steam but no humidity.
Well made, does the job, and customer service is great!

Before I bought this product I tried a cool mist humidifier but the white dust was unbearable. (I have very hard water.) When my electronics began breaking down due to the dust I knew I needed to get a warm mist humdifier.

Cleaning is a bit of a pain but has to be done, especially with my hard water. One complaint: the instructions say the long plastic vent can be washed in the top rack of a dishwasher but there is no way it would fit! I find I have to de-scale the heating part about once a week. If I don't the humidifier must overheat because it automatically shuts off, which is kind of convienent, actually. With my hard water and the scale is unbelievable. I followed the directions and soaked it in vinegar for twenty minutes, then even after a couple hours it still wasn't working. I called customer support and I have to say that the call was surprisingly pleasant! The call center is obviously here in the U.S. and not India, plus the rep was helpful and friendly. The rep said to soak it overnight or even longer. But she warned me not to scrub it with anything tougher than a toothbrush or I could damage the material. Now I soak it overnight, which I hate to do because my sinuses, skin, and hair (and plants) can tell the difference.

After a few days with this humidifier I was so happy I bought another one. I have them going all the time and even then I don't get condensation on the windows. The air is noticeably warmer with the warm mist humidifier too. If you live in Arizona, you might not want to get this style. Otherwise, I can't say enough good things about it.

I really like this product. It works well. It is not loud at all. Every once in a while it will "burp" when it is filling and heating the water but is not bothersome.
After researching many items this one seemed to be what I was looking for and I have not been disappointed.
I was very surprised, however, to see so many less than great reviews. I was shocked and had to throw in my two cents since I think this product is a great choice.

I have used this product for 4 winters, and and now starting on my 5th winter with this product. For the first 3 winters I used it every night, and last winter I used it 24 hours a day.

Obviously for the price you will get a pretty basic, simple product with no frills. However, if you maintain the product as instructed, you should get years of satisfactory use.

I did not clean off the heating element as often as I should have last winter. It gets very noisy after a while if you do not clean it. Granted, the thing is a pain to clean. I generally find myself hacking away at the mineral buildup with a butter knife. Vinegar also works but is smelly and you have to let it soak for a while.

I prefer this humidifier over the cool mist humidifiers (such as the cute animal ones at Target) because the steam that comes out is pure, and it is not prone to bacterial/mold buildup. Especially in my area, the tap water is so gross and smelly, a cool mist humidifier just stinks up the room.

A great buy for the price, but you have to do the maintenance!

I bought this little guy because this winter was brutal for sore throats, nose bleeds, and static electricity in my little home in upstate NY. The rabbit was going around looking like a charged puffball, giving off actual sparks. The cats cringed when I went to pet them, and I was simply miserable myself. I'm probably overworking the poor thing, but the sore throats have backed down, the cats are letting me pet them again.. and although the rabbit still looks like a static charged puffball, he's at least not giving off any sparks.

When I say "overworking", I mean that I'm using it to humidiate (I know, no such word, but it sounds good!) my entire 900+ square foot house, 24/7. So I don't expect miracles out of it, but any relief is... well, a relief. I use it on the Low setting, and it is not loud enough that it bothers me. Sounds a little like a muffled pot of boiling water. Had it on High once and it sounded like a slightly LESS muffled pot of boiling water. If you are a light sleeper and bothered by any noises, you might not want it in your bedroom, but I personally find it a rather comforting sound. Then again... it's not in MY bedroom.

I LOVE the fact that the tank has handles on both ends. I have fibromyalgia, and if there's a way to drop something, I can drop it. Two handles will cut that chance down just that much more. I also love that parts of it can go in the dishwasher. In fact, that was one of the reasons why I bought it - hey, it goes in the dishwasher! That and no filters! They saw me coming!

Down-side - only PARTS of it go in the dishwasher. The cooling chamber, medicine cup, and water tray CAN go in the dishwasher. The tank CAN'T. To disinfect the tank, you have to soak it in a bleach/water mixture. They recommend doing that once a week. Also, the water tray and heating chamber need to be soaked in vinegar once a week to remove any scale build-up. THIS IS IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE HARD WATER. In fact, I'd recommend it MORE than once a week. I do have hard water, and I saw build-up in just two days. And just soaking and wiping didn't do it - I took a toothbrush to it.

I noticed several reviews saying theirs broke down rather quickly. If they didn't do the vinegar treatment or didn't do it often enough, I could certainly see WHY it would break down.

Other nifty things. It has a night-light! Also, on the Low setting, one tank lasts me almost 24 hours. And in case I do forget to watch, it also has an automatic shut-off. Like I say, they saw me coming.

So yeah, I love it. But ya gotta clean it. And probably often. But my cats love me again. And the rabbit? Well... a piece of papaya goes a long way towards making amends with him.

Actually, I got this at Walmart under the ReliOn label, model RWM-975N,for about $27.00, but it's the same one by Kaz. Holds about a gallon, easy to fill, hasn't leaked, puts out a good amount of warm mist pretty quickly, pretty well made for the price. A plus is that the heating element can be easily removed for cleaning (unlike my old Honeywell, where you had to carry the whole unit to the sink to clean it). The only minus for me is that there is no timer, so you either have to let it run until it shuts itself off when it runs out of water, get up and shut it off manually, or gauge how much water to put in if you don't want it to run for hours.
Clean it religiously!

We're on our fourth month with this humidifier, and it performs well even if it is a tad noisy. However, you MUST clean this humidifier at least once a week just as the directions advise you to. I buy the cheapest white vinegar available---under $2.00 per gallon at Walmart. Every Saturday I let the heating element in the base soak in vinegar for most of the day. One could use distilled water in the tank instead of tap water to avoid the mineral build-up, but at about $1.50 a gallon PER DAY, distilled water is a much more costly option than weekly cleaning. This humidifier will almost certainly fail if it isn't cleaned regularly. That said, (and it's what the directions intimate), it's a pretty good machine for the money.

I bought this humidifier because the air in my home was so dry I was getting nosebleeds. Within a few days I felt so much better (even skin and lips aren't as dry/chapped).

PROS:
- Has a high setting and a low setting
- Quiet compared to other humidifiers
- Automatically shuts off when the tank is empty, and a "Reset" light appears to let you know to fill it.
- Is relatively small/compact. I move it from room to room, and it's not too heavy even when full.

CONS:
- Requires cleaning more than once a week, I wash the tank every other day just to be on the safe side.
- Minerals do build up in the "heating chamber" and the inside of the large part of the "removable tray" rather quickly, I would suggest using distilled or purified water. Or just make sure you clean it regularly (one or 2 times a week for the Removable tray and heating chamber), I use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove mineral build-up.
- "Medicine Cup" is on the small side. I don't use this feature, but others might find it inadequate.

***I don't mind cleaning, it only takes about 10 minutes when you clean all of the parts, even when I had to scrub off the mineral buildup.

only drawback is the mineral deposit from the water, (we have hard water).

I was nervous to purchase this because of some of the bad reviews, but I was desperate for a humidifier. After unsuccessfully trying a cool mist humidifier, I decided to purchase this one b/c it was pretty inexpensive.

It's really easy to use, really easy to take apart to clean, and pretty quiet. I had absolutely no problems with leaks. If I keep it pretty close to me when I sleep, it does a decent job of preventing stuffiness and discomfort due to dryness. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because I have to sleep with it so close to me to be effective (that's even with the bedroom door closed).

Two pieces of advice: 1. look for it at Target or Meijer - it's way cheaper than Amazon. 2. Make sure you follow the directions and clean it once a week. It does get build-up on the heating element from the minerals in the water.

I would recommend buying this.

We've had this humidifier for about one month now, and I absolutely love it. Both my husband and I snore at night and this reduces our noise. Also if I go to bed with the sniffles, I wake up with all congestion cleared. The night light on the switch is handy, and not too bright. Very easy to fill with 2 handles, one being the slip handle on the top and one on the bottom also. Cleaning is easy, and not a hassle at all.
As for the noise, I don't think it is bad at all. Its almost calming.

Quiet enough to not disturb one's sleep, works really well. One full tank lasts easily through the night (or 8-9 hours), even on the high setting. Cleaning it weekly is a must, but it's not hard. Just soak the parts in white vinegar for 30 min, then brush and rinse. The only problem is the heater unit - it's covered/insulated by this grey plastic cup that accumulates some pretty hard and sticky deposits on top. The cup is not removable, so all you can do is fill the space that contains it with vinegar to cover it well, and let it sit for a few hours until the calcium deposits soften. How long that takes depends on how heavy the deposits. I once forgot to clean it until almost two weeks of daily use passed - it took 24 hours of soaking in vinegar to be able to break the deposits off.
The humidifier seems sturdy, doesn't leak, doesn't create too much moisture even if you have it running 24 h/day, it's easy to dissasemble/assemble, and I love the auto shut off. The tank is easy to fill and handle for an adult, just make sure you hold it by both top and bottom when full - not sure the carrying handle is that strong.
Overall, it's not perfect, but it does the job well and I'm really happy I got it.
Pretty good

Seems well built so far after a month's use. I followed others advice and clean it weekly with vinegar. You can buy a huge vinegar bottle for a couple of dollars, and it will last a long time. I do leave the parts with buildup for hours instead of the 10-30 minutes that I've seen recommended - it seems to help the buildup just fall off. Easiest way - just do it Monday morning before work, after work rinse off the vinegar - and you're all done!
Best bedroom humidifier for my money

I purchased one of these from a local pharmacy about three years ago. I have a lot of allergy and sinus problems, so while I keep a cool mist humidifier in the living area of my house, I wanted a warm mist model for my bedroom. This product really delivered. If you need to generate a lot of humidity, it can do that without any trouble on high. On the lower setting, it lasts about 24 hours. It's easy to fill, and has a carrying handle on the bottom of the resevoir. The ability to use vaporizer liquid with this model is also a plus, and so far it is the only warm mist humidifier with this feature that actually works WELL and is easy to fill with medication(Sunbeam fails horribly). Use it and you will really be able to feel the menthol vapors working.

Does it make noise? Sure, it makes a very gentle noise that is barely noticable. If the sound of a light rain in the distance doesn't bother you, you shouldn't have a problem with this. You can always move it further from your bed (or wherever) if it bothers you, because like I said, this can put out a lot of humidity if you want it to. Just make sure you set it up a foot or two away from walls or curtains, or you might get some condensation. This should go without saying, though.

The only reason I don't give this full stars is because of problems connected with lime buildup. Yes, this is to be expected with any humidifier, and particularly unavoidable for warm mist models. My issue isn't that it needed to be cleaned with vinegar, but that the more time went on the more and more frequently it needed to be cleaned. The heating unit itself gets encrusted with lime, and if you don't preemptively clean it at a certain point, it will just stop working entirely until you do. This can be a pain if you weren't anticipating a problem and you don't have time to suddenly clean your humidifier when it refuses to work with little warning. Again, this could in theory be prevented by maintaining the humidifier before problems arise, but in practice I found that this wasn't the case. The first year I used the humidifier, I only had to clean it with vinegar about two times in the season. The second year, I had to clean it once a month (which was about what I was expecting). The third year, it got to the point where I had to clean it once a week, and then finally where it would stop working every couple of days. Eventually it refused to work entirely, even after a cleaning. Whether this was the result of some kind of internal breakdown of the humidifier that had nothing to do with lime deposits, I'm not sure, I just know that cleaning usually seemed to do the trick for the longest time. When I looked at the humidifier, it seemed to me that some of the lime buildup had actually become "baked on" to the heating element and could not be removed. Again, I'm not sure if this assessment is accurate, it was just my impression. Still, this humidifier lasted for three years, and when I decided to replace it with a Sunbeam model I regretted it. If I get three years of good, solid use out of this, it's worth my $35 again.

We have 3 young children, so we've bought A LOT of humidifiers/vaporizers over these past few years, we currently own 3 of these. 1st - Noise Level: One is silent, one gurgles, and the other has a slight hiss. Nothing loud, but it would seem it's noise is a luck of the draw. 2nd - Steam/Humidity output: It seems to work the best in a smaller room 10x12 -warm & water forms on windows, BUT... you really don't want that, it shouldn't be a rain forest in your childs room, only the bacteria will like this. In our other rooms that are 14x15 it needs to be placed closer to the child for coughing relief. What we do is in the smaller bedroom we put it on low (1/2 empty by morning), and the 2-larger bedrooms we put it on high (by the morning it's almost empty). WARM IS BETTER in my opinion because your kids aren't going to get burned, you can put them on the carpet or furniture because they won't burn the materials (burned up top of a chair and plastic toy box from a HOT vaporizer). The cost is reasonable, automatic shut-off once it's empty (VERY IMPORTANT), easy to clean and carry once they are filled with water. If you don't have kids and want to vaporize your living space, this is probably not the one. If you need to be concerned about safety (especially if your kids are mobile at night) and it's for the bedroom, this works.

I am happy with the performance and design of the machine, but it requires weekly soaking and cleaning with vinegar to remove scale. After one week of use and one attempted cleaning, some of the black scale came off when wiped with a rag, but there is still some being sucked up into the water tank and turns the water gray with black pieces floating. At this point it doesn't affect the performance. This is my first humidifier, so I don't know what the others require for cleaning.
Works ok, just as well if not better for longer time than more expensive brands.

We have this Vicks warm mist humidifier in our daughters room. It's a small room and according to the hygrometer we put in her room, humidity levels reach a high of 54% over night. We purchased a larger Bionaire model for our bedroom around the same time and let me just say it WAS a piece of junk. My advice, stick with the cheaper brands, they all seem to crap out in the same amount of time anyway. The Vicks V-745A seems to be hanging in there for now (5 weeks and counting). o, and the vicks one is easy to clean. you can easily soak the element in vinegar and use a toothbrush to clean it.

This is a perfect little humidifier for a small (~150 square foot) bedroom. It definitely retains a healthy amount of moisture during the dry winters here in the northeast, and unlike some other reviews I've read about this product, I don't find it too loud at all. Someone compared the noise (on low) to a pot of water boiling in the next room, and on high, a pot of water boiling in the same room. I think this is a perfect analogy. When the humidifier is on and producing mist, it's barely more than a whisper and doesn't irritate me or stop me from falling asleep (and I am a relatively light sleeper). My only major complaint is that the tank is very small, and needs to be filled up every night or every other night, depending on if you keep it on high or low.

I'm not sure about the automatic shut off because the light remains on, so I'm afraid to take a chance (I had a neighbor come into my apartment and shut if off when I forgot). I had a very expensive model before and it was way too complicated and you always had to buy their special sponges. When I decided to try one of my own sponges, it literally burned and melted. It's a bit of a pain to clearm (as with any warm mist) because of mineral build up. However, if you clean it weekly as the instructions suggest it's not bad. Just leave it soaking in vinegar and take a little toothbrush to it afer to loosen up more, it comes clean easily.

I like this so much, I'm ordering a second.

We purchased this humidifier to use in the room where our new baby sleeps, feeling that he'd benefit from having a little more humidity in the air at night. We are very pleased with this model. We like that the water reservoir is clear, so you can see how much water you have in it; it is easy to take apart and cleaning is pretty quick - we let everything dry out each day and maybe once a week use vinegar to remove the deposits on the heating element. This model boils the water before letting out the steam, one of the requirements we did have. It's pretty quiet in operation and the lighted area around the dial is helpful for turning it on/off or up/down at night. It's quite effective in terms of how it humidifies. Good model at the price.

I bought a vaporizer to relieve my sinuses of the dry winter indoor air. I keep a small basin of water on each of my radiators which I highly recommend, but this year, I purchased a vaporizer to see if it would help. This vaporizer is pretty quiet and seems to work OK. At the low setting I didn't really experience much difference; however, with all the snow and salt outdoors recently, my sinuses did get a bit stuffy as well as experiencing the discomfort of waking with a dry throat. I placed the vaporizer on high and I did feel a difference when I woke up the next morning. A sinus flush is also recommended before bedtime (also available at Amazon). So, after all these years without, I consider the purchase of this vaporizer a smart investment.

I recently purchased this product to replace a humidifier I purchased on Amazon that was defective. The Vicks humidifier works quite well and runs for about 10 - 12 hours when filled to capacity. The only potential downside of this product is that it makes a decent amount of noise while operating. The sound is approximately at the level of noise that a pot of boiling water makes. It does not disturb me while sleeping, but could possibly disturb very light sleepers. All in all great value for the price.

After looking at various humidifiers at my local Lowe's, I decided to buy the Vicks warm mist humidifier from Amazon based on positive reviews from friends. I was looking for a warm mist humidifier since we have pretty dry winters but humid summers, which means I don't need a cool mist humidifier in the summer.
Pros:
- The water tank is quite big (almost a gallon) and can hold enough water to last for about 20 hours on the low setting and about 10 hours or so on the high setting
- The controls are easy - there's a high setting, a low setting and an off setting.
- It humidifies a decent sized room (12'x12') fairly quickly - in about a half hour
- It's not very loud, at least on the low setting on which I usually leave it.

Cons:
- Needs to be cleaned thoroughly at least once every week with vinegar to remove all the scales that accumulate on the heating element. Actually this is not this particular humidifier's problem. All warm mist humidifiers suffer from this. Ideally it should be cleaned every day, but realistically you end up cleaning only about once a week. This is enough as long as you have a brush to brush of the scales after steeping the heating element in vinegar, but it's a pain nevertheless.
- The construction is on the tacky side. Not a huge issue, but it looks sturdier in the picture.

Used it through most of winter in our bedroom. Seem to work well but perhaps it would be a little better in a smaller room. Our room is about 16' x 16' x 10' high. Fairly easy to clean - about every 10-15 days.
Simple and works as advertised... again!

We liked our first humidifier so much that we've bought an additional one.
Now we have one for each bedroom during our dry winters.
The only thing I don't like about them is they are sometimes difficult to clean.
Otherwise, they are great for refill volume and airflow.
I shopped around online & at stores.
Amazon still has the best price (Dec 2009) even with the Christmas sales.
Cheers!

I bought this item from Amazon around a month back. After doing quite a bit of research, i got confused about all the products in the market. Later started looking for a humidifier which has decent ratings. Finally, I landed up purchasing this. It's really quite while in operation. Full tank comes for more than a day depends on the power level you chose. The good part is cleaning. It's not complicated at all.

When i bought this product, i haven't got any manual with it. I was confused a lot about filling water in the tank. Since i am new to this country and new to humidifiers i had to do Google Search to find the way to fill water in it. :-). So far no complaints apart from not providing manual.

Hope this helps... Happy buying.

"Objective" review

Review Date: January 12, 2008
Reviewer: Scott Robinson, New York, NY USA
Yesterday I went downtown to look for a humidifier for my bedroom. What I thought would be an easy project turned into one of frustration. I wound up going to three different drug stores to try to get an idea of what to buy. Most of the humidifiers I saw were by Kaz (Vicks), who makes many different models. To make choosing a model supposed easier, somewhere along the line the company put a graph on only some of their model's boxes to indicate which model to buy based on your needs. (I wanted it for colds and flu). This graph was at one point changed and updated. But the problem is that Kaz doesn't label their boxes too well as to what model applies to the graph. From what I can tell it is these newer graphs that grade their humidifiers as Best, Better, Good or nothing depending upon the purpose intended. But if you are trying to choose between warm or cool all Kaz tells the consumer is some people prefer the warm mist to the cool mist while some don't. How this is supposed to help the consumer decide I'll never know.

Anyhow, I wound up with this model (v745A) because it was supposed to be all purpose and being the winter here in the NE I thought warm rather than cool mist would be better. An added benefit with the warm mist is that you can add an inhalant and with my current cold that would help. I did have some concerns about whether this unit would be enough for my 16x16x10 room. Kaz only labels some of their boxes with the size room the unit is good for but this one does not say. All my observances below were made using this unit on the high setting.

BUILD: The unit itself is built OK nothing more (and I didn't expect more) but seems a little flimsy.

NOISE: OK, the noise. Come on people, this device boils water for steam, hence the name "Warm Mist". You should not expect this to be absolutely silent so stop whining. And for those of you with the "Princess and the Pea" syndrome do NOT buy it. But for those who want an idea of what it sounds like from 3 feet away think of it is like the sound of a rainy day or it is like having an aquarium in the room. It is not loud at all (certainly no louder than a fan on low speed) and could be soothing to those who like white noise.

PERFORMANCE: This unit does humidify my bedroom but it does take a while to have its effect, so I would start it before I went to bed. The amount of mist that comes out is probably not as great as if you were boiling water in a soup pan. [Please do not have unrealistic expectations: your room will not to turn into a steam bath and you will not see the mirrors fog up as they do in the bathroom.] Ideally, two of these in my room would probably suit it better. I can not say that the added inhalant has a great effect. I can smell it in the mist as it is coming out right above the unit but would not be aware of it otherwise. Incidentally, Vicks makes a personal model of these, but I would skip it in favor of this one because you could just breath in the vapors as it comes out of the top of this unit for the same effect.

CONCLUSION: Overall I am OK with this purchase. Frankly, I don't see how anyone could "love" this device or anything like it. It does what it does. I am not sure if another model would have been better. Kaz really needs to make choosing between these models easier. Having used it now I would only recommend a WARM mist for winter use (when most colds and flu occur). It would be too warm and uncomfortable at other times. I have not had it long enough to test its durability.
Vicks Humidifier is adequate

Review Date: January 9, 2010
Reviewer: R. Liu, Parsippany, NJ USA
The Vicks humidifier has served adequately so far. It doesn't give off as much steam as some of the other ones I have had in the past. So don't expect to feel like you're in the tropics. However, I like the design. Most other humidifiers often have a handle to pick it up but the opening to fill it up with water is usually located on the opposite side. This is somewhat annoying as I have to flip it. The Vicks tank has two handholds on both sides. I would say the "whisper quiet" claim is grossly exaggerated. It's more like the sound of boiling water. However - I am typically a light sleeper and it is constant sound so it hasn't bothered me. It does give sputters once it gets low on water - but that seems to be the case with every humidifier. It has a simple high and low switch - for those of you who like a dial controlling humidity more precisely, this isn't for you. It seems like a sturdy piece of equipment. The true test is to see if it lasts more than one year. I have gone through 3 humidifiers in the last 5 years (including one that costs around $100!). Not sure why it's so hard to make one that doesn't break.

If you want a decent product at a reasonable price, I would recommend this product. And you can use their Vicks medicine as a bonus if you get sick=)

I must say, at first I was very pleased with the product- quiet, looks nice, works well in the baby's room -- but after about 2 weeks it stopped working! Apparently it needs to be taken apart and cleaned daily! And even if you clean it daily, there is also weekly cleaning instructions and instructions for when you are going to leave it unused for a few days. The build up on the heating element is insane if you don't clean it as the directions instruct. It's a nice machine, but a lot of work!

Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier with Auto Shut-OffThis product works fine, but you do have to perform daily and weekly maintainance such as emptying the water daily after use and cleaning mineral deposits with vinegar weekly.
It has fought off dry skin issues this winter and static build up on my clothing. It is only efficient at handling a moderate size room.

This humidify works ok but seems cheaply made. It makes weird bubbling noises and heats up the room. We returned it for a cold air model from Honeywell. It also has a really small water container which results in constant filling. I would look else where if you are going to use it all the time, like we do. One last comment, courtesy of my wife, is that it makes the room feel kind of like the bathroom after a hot shower. The cold air ones don't have the same effect, its humidity that's more friendly.

I've had TWO of these humidifiers for over two years. I had to buy two of them so that I could keep one running while I painstakingly cleaned the other one. It's such a job to clean that my kids have to be seriously ill for me to break it out and put it in their room. The mineral build up is ridiculous even when you used purified/distilled water. It still works ok. I'm sure there's better out there, though.
Leaks caused by crack in tank

Review Date: December 29, 2009
Reviewer: f/2.8,
The humidifier worked well for a few weeks then started leaking around the dial. I called customer service and they said the tank might be cracked, causing excess air to enter the tank and increase water flow to the unit. Sure enough, there was a two inch crack at the top of the tank where the white handle attaches to it. Apparently the connection was not sturdy enough to take the weight of a tankful of water.
Kaz will be sending over a replacement tank and I'll not use the handle for carrying the tank any more.

pros:
- warm mist and medicine cup allow for aroma oils to be added to the mist - good for adding a scent or healing cough or cold
- night-light makes it easy to see dial in dark
- auto shut-off gives you a piece of mind
- size - very compact

cons:

- eats up almost the whole gallon of water during one night
- TOO MUCH MAINTENANCE! the manual suggests to empty, disassemble and dry the whole thing EVERY DAY! then to clean it with vinegar once a month.
- heating element deteriorate as soon as the first week!!!
- printed words on medicine cup come off at first contact with medicine (when pouring it out)
- some parts collect water and you need a screwdriver to open and drain it!

bottom line - you get what you paid for... only $40 at CVS
Leaked after several months of use.

Had mine for about 2 months. The water would collect underneath the tank and not filter up through the other side correctly. The filter side would get very hot (and smell). The water tank kept emptying and it would overflow onto my floor. The Auto Shut-Off never worked either. It worked the first week, then had all those problems.

Night One: Couldn't sleep with the gurgling noise. Night two: Tried the lower setting but it was still too noisy. Middle of Night Two: Shut it off completely. Day three: Took it back to Target. Will get an ultrasonic. Have had them before and the noise is much more consistent and quieter. The steam feature (this is my first one) seems only useful if you are in a tiny room (like a bathroom) because it cools off as soon as it comes out of the nozzle.
not for medium-large room

Review Date: February 28, 2008
Reviewer: regina, oakland,ca.
Bought this yesterday at Target after spending too much time trying to figure out which of the 10 units (warm mist, cool mist, vaporizer..etc)was right for me. My daughters' room is 11x18, which I consider a medium-large size bedroom. Decided on warm mist since where we live in the bay area it's usually cool most of the year and have always used and like warm mist. Need this for my girls' colds, flu and bad seasonal allergies.

My experience:
Since it's used only at bedtime, plugged it in early to get the room moist. 1 hour later, no one felt a difference. We felt a slight mist (at full setting) coming out, but the room was not moist. After 2 hours, we felt a very slight moisture in the air. It could be that this unit can't handle my medium size room. The box claimed it would last about 12 hours, but after 2 hours the water was already down by 1/3. Checked it after 10 hours and it was completed empty so it probably lasted only 6 hours at high setting by my estimation.

Solution:
Returning it today to look for a larger model but since from past experience we know they all last at most 1-2 years of light-medium use, getting an inexpensive one is wise.

Ordered this in August 2009, and have had the unit turn off on me at least 4 times. It had a half full tank of water each time and did not have to be reset. I used it for a small room and depending on its working ability it would some times put out a nice warm mist and other times you could not feel anything happening. When it did decide to work it worked ok, have had other brand models that had greater outputs with less hassle. Be prepared to clean it thoroughly especially if you have hard water. Overall I would invest in another brand and save your thirty plus bucks for a model with better features, this one is lack luster at best!

First of all I can't tell if this is adding any humidity to my bedroom. I still wake up with dry crusty or bloody nose every morning. I have it on a platform about 3 feet past the foot of my bed. Maybe that's too far away, I don't know. Even on high, the mist that comes out is very weak--you can't feel it 2 feet away. But the biggest problem is that on high, I can't hear the TV playing in the same room. There would be no way to sleep with it on high either. I turn it to low and it sounds all night like there is a raging rainstorm outside. I can sleep through that but it may not be worth it given that it hasn't helped my dry nose. I guess I could try putting it on my nightstand next to my face but the noise really is annoying. So I'll experiment for another week or so and then return this for a different type. If anyone has ideas about correct location in a bedroom, please let me know. But I wouldn't recommend this one even though it's cheap.

Along with most of the "warm Mist" method humidifiers- this one has a nice looking steam coming out of its plasticated chimney. Works great until you realize it will need a refill after about 4 1/2 hours. On the 3rd or 4th day, it will error out- you take it apart, see the massive mineral buildup, soak with vinegar/ water, scrub, re-assemble, use for 3 days, repeat. Keep in mind all the parts (save the heating element) are PLASTIC, after heating, cooling, cleaning, etc. a few times, it's like a pathetic plastic rag doll, ill-fitting, coated in scrub marks and mineral gunk that is harder than the plastic itself...

Expect about a season of use before you dump this sucka...

When it works, it's great. Lots of warm mist without too much noise.

The problem is that the valve from the tank to the heating element is unreliable. It often closes up and cuts off the water supply. Result: the unit stops working and asks for a Reset, even though the tank is full.

This is the least reliable humidifier I have ever bought.
Leaking Machine

Reviewer: Mom to be,
I used this in my baby daughter's room. After a month or so, it started to leak. I put a towel underneath it, but that didn't work as the volume of water was too much, and the water ran down the front of my daughter's dresser and the results was 2 drawers with wet clothes. Before it started to leak, it was a great machine. Ran all night, was quiet, I was very happy with the machine.

Becuase I live in NY, I choose a warm air humidifier for my daughter's room. The warm air did keep her room slightly warmer than the rest of the bedrooms - which was preferred since she didn't use a blanket.

I was incredibly happy with this product for 2 1/2 weeks. I did the recommended daily cleaning (yes, it's a pain but you have to make sure your 'crud' doesn't harden like cement). I did the weekly cleaning with the vinegar too. Yesterday it started leaking. I checked the tank - no leaks. It had to be coming from the base/heating element. With the tank off, I filled the base/heating unit area (like I was cleaning it) and watched as it continued to leak. So I took the entire bottom off the unit and everything was soaked inside (i.e. the wires!!!). It appears the seal on the heating element has gone bad after 2 1/2 weeks. It's going back to the store.

Doesn't even fit together correctly

Review Date: February 6, 2008
Reviewer: Primrose Hill, UK
I have been looking for a humidifier for several weeks but all the ratings I have seen for them seem pretty dismal for the entire product category. Making steam in a bedroom seems a pretty simple idea, but no one seems to have figured out a way to do it yet (for less than $150 anyway). I bought one of these humidifiers at a local drugstore based on these pretty good reviews here. I took it out of the box and the thing didn't even fit together. I tried for 10 minutes. There is a tiny little flap at the back of the water heating element (a fraction of a centimeter long) and it has to latch onto the main unit so that the water heating section is secure on the unit (otherwise it wobbles and falls backwards). Well, the fraction of the centimeter was not long enough to stick into the latch, no matter how I tried to adjust it. I imagined that this must be an atypical fault, so I took it back to the store and got another one. I asked the store clerk to check it out for me before I took it home. She unpackaged it and tried to put it together herself, but the new one was designed the same way, with there being no possible way that the tiny flap would stay inside the latch. She gave me my money back. Then I bought an old fashioned vaporizer, which conked out and stopped producing steam after 2 days (even though after the first day I did a thorough cleaning, the type they recommend is done weekly) and I am returning that today. Having lived abroad for the last decade with lovely, gentle radiator heating, I can't stand this US forced-air heat which has made the humidity in my home less than 25%. I am getting shocked everytime I touch something, and it's beginning to hurt a little. Who knows what the static electricity is doing to my new computer equipment.

I recently purchased this since my old humidifier was probably a decade old and was starting to have some problems.

The reviews for this item were generally positive and I liked the ability to add the vicks medicine packs, which I figured would be great for helping to sleep when my sinuses got clogged.

I highly regret purchasing this product. It was a complete waste of my money. It puts a decent amount of moisture into the air but it is so loud that there is no way to fall asleep if you aren't the kind who can fall asleep watching TV at regular volume. I cannot fall asleep in complete silence so a little background noise is always welcome, but this is more than background noise. They fail to tell you, until you've purchased and opened the product, that there is an open water reservoir in the bottom so that if you happen to trip over it, even if the tank stays intact, you'll still have a puddle to deal with. The open reservoir in the bottom also means that the bottom of the tank, where it connects to the rest of the unit, is constantly dripping wet. So taking the tank off to refill it means dripping water everywhere even though the tank is "sealed."

Unless you absolutely need the medicine pack element, stick with the old style tank with insert humidifier.

This thing couldn't even keep it humid after I had the shower on hot for 15 minutes! I noticed this was not adding any humidity to our room even though it stated it was for large rooms. Our room is only 14 x 14 with a small bath. It's not that big!!! This thing could not even make a difference! Maybe it is because I live in the desert, and it is dry dry dry, but this didn't do a thing. It couldn't even get the mentholatum stuff out of the cup. It was awful and could only make it about 8 hours. On the bright side, it wasn't that noisy, but not that quiet either. If you live in the dry dry dry, stay away away away!!!

The bottom of the unit melted and left a charred spot on my carpet.

I purchased this humidifier and it worked very well. I admit, I wasn't as diligent about cleaning it as I should have been, and one day I looked and it had huge greenish blobs growing all inside the tank. With the small opening, you can't reach inside the tank to scrub it, so I bought a replacement tank and took care to keep it clean. The tank ran dry one day, and after sitting a few hours empty and warm, this tank also started growing hunks of what looks like snot inside (gross, I know, but that's what it looks like). Sinch you can't access the tank to scrub it, another tank is toast. I'm going to look for a humidifier that's easier to clean.

We followed the care instructions for this item, and it worked well in the beginning, but despite cleaning it regularly and according to the directions, minerals built up on the filter and the tank got a black residue that was impossible to remove. The tank does not come apart for easy cleaning. It has a hole in the top to pour water in that is about an inch and a half wide, so you cannot clean the inside of the tank well. We tried shoving a rag into the the tank and shaking vigorously when using the weekly bleach to disinfect, but the process could not remove the black residue. After about a month of use, it also started leaking. Finally, the automatic cut-off function works only after the water completely runs out. When the water completely runs out, the unit is more difficult to clean. Very disappointed overall. I had researched humidifiers to try to find a reliable, affordable one that did not require replacement filters. I guess the search continues.

This humidifier is not worth the $40 I paid for it. It's shuts off on it's own and the thing is not even sturdy enough to hold the water it was made to hold. It stopped working after about a week when I bought it, then I cleaned it out and it worked for another 3 days. Now it's sitting in the corner of the room collecting dust. Please listen to all the other reviews on this item and do not buy, I didn't listen and wasted $40.

Boy - after reading the reviews I thought I was crazy. Everyone else seemed to think this product was great. Then I saw the one from Primrose from a couple of years ago. Can't agree with her more. I just bought this and took it out of the carton. There are was tape holding the reserve tank to the humidifier tank (just a couple of small pieces like you'd see on a package). When I took the tape off, the pieces immediately started to wobble back and forth, like they didn't fit right. When I filled the resevoir with water, it started leaking from one of the seals. I got that fixed but when I placed it on the humidifier unit, all of the water drained from the resevior tank all over the bathroom floor. Maybe Primrose and I got a bad batch but this was a piece of junk.

We found this product to not only spray the walls and ceiling, but after less than 30 days, it would leak uncontrollably from the dial area. Would not recommend!

I purchased the Vicks warm mist humidifier and it leaks regardless of what I do. The first time it happened, I tried to move it to the bathroom as the water had run all over creation, in the process, the tank fell off and in catching it, my right hand was burned by the steam. Fortunately, it was noting severe. More like a bad sunburn. I was terribly disappointed with this product.
